The entire 33 man crew of a merchant ship was lost when the vessel, described as a flaming mass, sank in the Gulf of Mexico on June 22. Rescue efforts recovered only a life preserver bearing the ship’s name and an empty boat. The attack’s method remains unknown as the other sinkings noted increased wartime losses to Allied and neutral ships.
