Clarifying Penalties for Insufficient Initial Melds in Canasta
In two handed canasta there is no penalty for an insufficient initial meld. In four handed play, if a meld falls short of the required points and cannot be corrected, all face up cards on the table become penalty cards. If the error is called after discard but before the next player acts, the mislaid cards stay penalties. if the next player acts first, the error is tolerated. While penalty cards remain, discards from hand are forbidden until they are resolved.
