Voters in the $5,200,000 bond election slated for January must have paid the 1950 poll tax by February 1, 1951 to be eligible. Earlier notes suggested paying the 1951 tax by February 1, 1952 would qualify. The bond would raise total city bonded indebtedness to $10,471,000 with existing $2,982,000 revenue bonds. repayment would extend 20 years.
NEW YORK, Dec. 7. Three Bradley University basketball stars admitted fixing games for pay. Judge Saul Streit suspended sentences but blasted Bradley University and its profits as corrupting and demoralizing the youths. He noted parallel bribe cases and said the university contributed to the corruption.
The District 9 executive committee of the Texas State Teachers Association canceled Ernest O. Melby’s speaking engagement for the March 14 conference after Amarillo officials and Rep. Walter Rogers highlighted Melby’s multiple mentions in the Un-American Activities files. Melby defended his anti-Communist record and said he has spoken in 46 states against totalitarianism.

Republican Congressman O. K. Armstrong of Springfield Missouri told Panhandle audiences that the United States should pause further drafting of farm labor war industry workers and of fathers and husbands until manpower from Allied nations is assessed. He spoke to civic clubs in Borger and planned talks in Childress and Amarillo with the theme We Can Have Peace in Europe. Senate Armed Services subcommittee on Preparedness reported finding trivial waste at six Air Force bases including Langley Carswell Lowry Mather March and Keesler. The group said further investigation is needed before a public report and cited overstocked food lavish dining hall furniture and requests for lavish recreational facilities as examples.
The storm front that swept the Panhandle Plains moved toward the Great Lakes on Friday. Light east winds 5 to 10 mph replace the duster, leaving topsoil loose and dust settled. Amarillo faces mostly cloudy skies then clearing with highs near 47 and a freezing 21 tonight.
Dallas investigators traced the August slaying of wealthy Dallas oilman Thomas W. Doswell to Amarillo briefings. They checked on his widow Rebecca Doswell, free on bond, and her alibi routes via Pueblo Snyder Clovis before returning to Dallas. The probe explored possible audible disputes during their West Texas and New Mexico trip. Doswell left most of his estate to his brother Houston J. Doswell. Rebecca faced murder charges.
A Communist correspondent hinted that no more than half of the 10,000 Americans reported missing in Korea are prisoners of war. The claim came from Panmunjom as Allied negotiators opened talks on an armistice policing plan.
Police report a burglar removed a screen at Emmett E. Davis residence 2215 Hayden Thursday night, reached inside to grab about $95 from Mrs Davis purse. Detectives say a window was raised after the screen was removed. The case ties to several similar break-ins in recent weeks.
The Amarillo area should be mostly cloudy and cooler this afternoon with clearing tonight and colder conditions. Saturday will stay clear and cool with highs near 52 and a low around 2? to 25. The period ending at 6 30 this morning recorded a high of 54 and a low of 25. West Texas was generally fair and a bit colder with lows 20 to 26 in the Panhandle and 26 to 32 in the South Plains. A 50 year old former Am settling and refining employee Stevens was sentenced to death by a District Court jury after a 20 minute deliberation for the Aug 11 bludgeon slaying of Joshua Blocher 85 founder of Progress. Testimony showed Stevens blamed Thomas Livesay and asked for possible appeal while defense cited reversible errors. The victim disappeared Aug 11 and was found Aug 15 in a cotton field near his shanty. The case moves to page 2 for continuation.
City tax collections at the December 1 deadline totaled 658026.28, about 100000 more than the same date in 1950, said John Crudgington of the city school tax department. The Dec. 1 deadline carried no penalty. School tax receipts reached 794904.68, up from 613944.58 in 1950, with city school taxes about a third of the total roll.

A preliminary report by George Waddill shows six Sandies home football games raised $20,122.79 for the Amarillo stadium fund, below the $22,456.50 mortgage requirement. Total stadium revenue reached $27,792.40 with additional $5,089.15 from out of town games, but expenses are projected near $10,000. A complete statement will be issued before the December 17 school board meeting.
