Assaulter of White Girls Is Hanged to Tree
Oliver Moore, a 29 year old black man, was seized from Edgecombe jail by about 200 masked men and hanged from a tree near Wilson county. The mob then fired scores of bullets into his body as deputies were overpowered. Moore had faced a preliminary hearing for assaulting two young white girls, Ethel and Lucille Morgan. This marked North Carolina’s first lynching since 1921.
