Trans-Isthmian Highway to Span Isthmus by Spring
Under tropical sun and by electric light 1000 workers are building the 50 mile Trans-Isthmian highway linking Colon on the Atlantic with Panama on the Pacific. The road, 40 feet wide with reinforced concrete lanes, will cut through Panamanian jungle and connect Madden dam area to Cativa near the Canal Zone border. Construction is supervised by the Public Roads Administration under a 1939 treaty, with Panama providing right of way and labor from Panamanian workers and American equipment operators. The project aims to complete by next spring, improving regional transport across the Isthmus for about 900,000 people and integrating with the Pan-American route network.
