Increased Activity Seen In Brewster Mining Area
Rev M M Fulmer will preach farewell as pastor of the local Baptist church. He and his wife and three children depart for Uvalde where he will lead the First Baptist church. Reports from Brewster county indicate rising quicksilver demand spurring activity in the Terlingua district around the Chisos mines. Several mines show production while new equipment arrives. A 30 ton rotary plant from Black Mesa Mining co operates on Mrs F E Gillet’s Alpine holdings. A 20 ton concentrating mill in Ben Hole canyon is being rebuilt after flood damage. New test holes and shafts are planned for Interstate Realty Co area and Waldron Quicksilver properties. A steel derrick was erected for upcoming tests near Marathon.

Vacation Bible School Under Way At Mexican Baptist Church
Vacation Bible School is ongoing this week at Mexican Baptist Church led by Rev John Abbott missionary to Mexicans in Texas. Attendance averaged 73 with 11 professions of faith and four rededications by Sunday evening. Rev Leo Estrada pastor and Mrs Lula Murphy superintendent directed the program with several Alpine and out of town helpers. Evangeli stic services are held each evening through Friday.

Sul Ross Summer Session Opens Next Week
Registration for Sul Ross annual summer session is set for June 4 and 5 with two six week terms. Harry Anthony de Young of San Antonio will lead the Sul Ross Summer Art colony offering courses for beginners and advanced students with outdoor work in Big Bend National Park and the Davis Mountains. Visiting faculty will augment the staff. Special courses include general and vocational guidance for teachers. A summer alumnae college teacher community clinics and information program are announced with a Conservation course and Federal and state lecturers. Events coordinated with teacher training cover a broad field.

Livestock Auction Sales Suspended to Build New Quarters
T L Hatch of Brewster County Livestock Auction Sales company announced suspension of livestock auction sales until about the first week in August. New pens and auction sheds will be built near the Santa Fe pens to accommodate stock. The current setup is unsatisfactory. during shipping season the Santa Fe pens must be available to shippers. Ranchmen are asked to await a definite restart date after construction.

End of the 1940-41 sessions at Sul Ross and Alpine High
The 1940 41 sessions for Sul Ross College and Alpine High School closed with commencement exercises. Sul Ross awarded 42 degrees nine masters and 33 bachelors while Alpine High School issued 45 diplomas with eight more to be conferred in summer school. Major de Bessieres inspected local units and praised drill, with captains and lieutenants named for Companies A and B. Charles Livingston Jr earned first division in national band contests in Waco.

Calf Born With Two Heads Shocks Brewster County
Gene Thorne, ranching 25 miles west of Sanderson in Brewster County, delivered a baldface Hereford calf with two heads. To save the cow, Thorne and a ranch hand broke the calf’s neck. the carcass will be mounted and sold to benefit the Sanderson Eagles football fund.

Pioneer conference opens Monday at Mitre Peak Guest Ranch
The Pioneer conference of the Presbyterian church will open at the Mitre Peak Guest Ranch north of Alpine next Monday. Rev. S. At a chamber of commerce meeting attended by the Texas Defense Guard American Legion auxiliary fire department the mayor county judge and commissioners Sul Ross college Boy Scouts Cubs Girl Scouts Rotary 20-20 clubs PTA El Progreso Study Gar and other women’s clubs and churches the Red Cross and the Irish American War Veterans final plans were made for the joint Memorial Day service and review of the two Texas Defense Guard battalions. Each organization will march in full strength in the parade. Brig Gen J Watt Page adjuvant general of Texas and state Selective Service director will inspect and review the two battalions headquartered in Alpine.

May rainfall totals rise as Davis mountains tally rain

Mining Engineer Dies at Study Butte Mines Last Week
Fred S. Laubert a 62 year old mining man died of a heart attack at the Study Butte mines in southern Brewster county last Saturday afternoon. He had been at the mines a month and formerly worked in Mexico and other locations. A Spanish American and World War veteran he recently received the Purple Heart and was a member of the American Legion and Masonic bodies. His widow traveled from Lees Summit Missouri to San Antonio to collect the body for cremation and burial. Akers Funeral home prepared the body for shipment to San Antonio.

Davis Mountains Highway Culverts Will Be Built
Fort Davis May 20 Seven culverts are to be constructed on the nine mile section of the Davis Mountains State Park highway under contract to the Holland Page Construction Company. Bids were based on plans. no major bridge is required. There will be seven concrete culverts and fifty metal culverts, ranging from single tubes to multiple tubes, extending from Nunn Hill to the Moore ranch and then around to the Fort Davis Valentine road, about 14 miles more to complete the loop.
