Weather and ranch reports in the Texas Rockies describe unusually lush May conditions with wetlands and damp ranges. A brief special session of district court here Saturday disposed of W D Burcham versus J J Willis foreclosing vendor lien notes. A jury was empaneled and heard testimony but the case was withdrawn from the jury and settled, jurors dismissed. Brewster county versus Elmer Taylor to recover excess taxes was continued to the next regular term in August.
Granada theatre completes installation of new projection and sound equipment. Manager Wally Davis says the latest improved type cost about 35000. Beginning tomorrow the Granada will run a matinee daily at 2 p.m.
Fort Davis note: Mrs George W Gleim aged 89 died in Marfa May 31 and was buried there June 4. She had lived in Fort Davis in earlier days, her husband once managing the W Keesey store. Survived by three children George Gleim of Marfa, Mrs S W Leverett of Balmorbea, and Mrs S W Luke of Royalty.
Captain Cecil Duncan announced that Company A, 3rd Battalion Texas Defense Guard will hold a retreat this evening at seven o'clock on the Centennial school grounds. The public is invited to attend. Mrs. Guy Crawford is reported to be recovering satisfactorily from an appendectomy performed at Alpine hospital last Sunday.
Registration for the 1941 summer session at Sul Ross College nears completion. A college barbeque and picnic at Kokernot Park tomorrow opens summer recreation, followed by outdoor games and informal dancing in the gym. The first assembly welcomed students and offered full college facilities for summer instruction and pleasure. Visiting faculty members and wives from Wichita, Houston, and University Miss are arriving for summer work.
Fort Davis reports four additional miles of the Davis Mountains State Park highway to be built. The section will run from the Moore ranch fence line through Ho canyon toward the Fort Davis Valentine road, with surveying underway. When completed the loop will total 42 miles through scenic Davis Mountains.
Bert, representing the Western Livestock Association based in Denver, is in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains area for a few days and plans to return at intervals over the next several months to advance his organization’s interests.
Ballots for the special senatorial election to replace the late Morris Sheppard were printed by The Avalanche and sent to County Clerk J. W. Frazer. The five column ballot lists 29 candidates, with 25 Democrats, two Republicans, one Communist, one Independent, and one blank column. Names include Joseph C. Bean, John R. Brinkley, Cyclone Davis, Martin Dies, W. Lee O Daniel, Homer Brooks, and others.
A Baptist church selects a five member committee led by Don Littleton to study candidates for a new pastor. Rev M Fulmer leaves after four and a half years to join First Baptist in Uvalde. The committee asks Rev A H Swearingen to fill the pulpit next Sunday while options are studied for a pending recommendation.
Charles H. Maxey 31, electrician for Central Power and Light, was fatally shocked while repairing a line at the south end of the Fifth Street bridge. On the pole with Maxey, Ned McKinney, CP&L worker, could not assist due to gear. The circuit through a metal conduit caused instant death after a failed balance and attempted washer placement. Maxey, a nine year Alpine resident born May 17 1910 in Sulphur, Oklahoma, had married Mary Weston in Alpine on February 18 1940 and was active in civic affairs as Alpine 20-30 Club president.
The popular summer conservation course at Sul Ross college opens today. It offers three semester hours in government geography economics or agriculture and is open to men and women. Lectures run daily fourth period 12:15 with speakers from federal and state agencies and the college.
Miss Aleta Bierschwale of Alpine named highest ranking co ed at Sul Ross college in scholastic honors for the 194 graduating class. Oliver Parks of Eola earns the same among men. Her father A J Bierschwale heads the animal husbandry department.
Frank Ray, a local attorney, returned from Washington D C where he was admitted to practice before the U S Supreme Court. Sponsored by Rep R E Thomason, this distinction places him among a small group of area attorneys. He also visited his seriously ill mother in Selma Alabama.
A well-bury conference was held May 26 under Miss Pearl Fulcrod county health nurse and Miss Nellie Litchfield. Few mothers brought babies to be weighed and measured, ages two to eight months. Five preschool children, ages one to five, were also examined.
Fort Davis June 4 The asphalt surfacing of the road from Fort Davis to the observatory is under way. By midweek the stretch from near town to the Prude's ranch had been completed with the base down. Wet weather slowed progress but work will continue as weather permits.
Road crew reports almost complete paving on the first ten miles of U S Highway 67 south of Shafter with oil spread over a 22 foot wide center strip. Heavy rains delayed work but resurfacing and shoulder reconditioning of the remaining ten miles toward Presidio will continue. Contractor to move oil spreader to Jeff Davis county. asphalt treatment expected by late June. Miss Anne Ellis returns home from teaching at McCamey for the summer.
After schools closed, Alpine faculty dispersed for summer assignments. Supt. Bankhead remains in Alpine to lead Sul Ross summer training. Dozens of teachers plan summer work at Sul Ross, Texas U, San Marcos, and other locales with many pursuing advanced degrees. He notes over 30 million sheep in the United States.
Rains and showers continued across the Big Bend and Davis mountains with widespread moisture this week. A downpour near Sul Ross college measured 1.59 inches, another 0.52 inches fell Tuesday with hail, and the May total reached 3.33 inches. The rains improved ranges, fattened stock, and were noted as more general than last May.
Brig. Gen. J Watt Page inspected 307 Texas Defense Guard members in Alpine with General and Mrs. Page attending. Memorial Day services at Sul Ross College featured officials from the guard American Legion and community groups. Page praised Texas for large guard numbers and preparedness while noting Fort Russell facilities available for future training.
