Sul Ross State college announces 42 degrees will be conferred at the commencement exercises. Dr W H Elkins president of San Angelo College will give the commencement address Wednesday evening May 28. Rev Fred S Rogers pastor of Alpine First Presbyterian will deliver the baccalaureate on Sunday morning May 25. Thirty nine Bachelors and three MA degrees will be awarded. Grand schedule includes president's reception and Senior Class Day. Junior-Senior banquet held May 9.

Alpine settler S Blevins dies after 54 years in town
S Blevins aged 75 died at his North Alpine home after midnight on Wednesday. He arrived in Alpine October 3 1886 two days after his 21st birthday and is survived by his widow a son John and two grandchildren William and Shirley of Alpine. Funeral services were held at 4:30 PM at Livingston Funeral Home with Rev Fred S Rogers officiating and interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Details of his life to appear next week in The Avalanche.

Three Brewster Youths To Graduate at A. and M.
Tom Hugh Stovell Alpine Frank Richard Lewis Alpine and Karl E Ball Marathon are among 800 candidates for Texas A M College degrees to be conferred Friday evening June 6. Tom is a BS in agricultural administration and has a second lieutenant appointment in the coast artillery. Richard seeks a fourth degree in chemical engineering with a second lieutenant commission in chemical warfare service. Karl earns a degree in electrical engineering. Richard will be stationed at Edgewood Arsenal Maryland and Tom will train at Fort Bliss before going to Fort Monroe Virginia.

Rev Fulmer Resigns to Lead Uvalde Baptist Church
Rev. M. M. Fulmer, pastor of the Alpine Baptist church for four and a half years, accepts a call to lead the First Baptist church at Uvalde and will leave Alpine after June 1. His resignation was read and accepted last Sunday. He notes the Uvalde field offers a larger work while expressing regret at leaving Alpine. A successor has not been named and a pulpit committee is expected to be appointed soon.

Legislature Repeals Law Protecting Large Predatory Birds
Texas lawmakers enacted a measure effective May 21 allowing hunting of golden eagles and Mexican brown eagles statewide. Ranchers had pressed for repeal citing livestock losses totaling thousands annually. Game Warden Ray Williams has been notified of the act.

Forty five seniors will receive diplomas at Alpine high school's commencement in the college auditorium next Thursday at 8 15 p m. Eight more diplomas will be awarded after summer school, making the 1941 class among the largest in the school's history. E M Pooley of the El Paso Herald Post will deliver the address. W D Pedigo reports the annual Salvation Army fundraising drive netted $65 last week, slightly above last year. The single yearly drive is the Army’s only authorized fundraising event, Pedigo said.

The Alpine PTA wrapped a successful year at a May meeting. Miss Lucy Miller showcased a kindergarten rhythm band, with Miss Mary Bess Hamilton at the piano, and officials announced 1941 42 officers and chairpersons. Corine Littleton read Trees by Joyce Kilmer as Corine Pope received a state life membership pin and a fold oak seat in farewell.

A large livestock auction in Brewster County sold over three hundred head this week. Local buyers included Fred Harper Piedra and others as the sale proceeds were announced with details of stock and consignors.
Alpine Masonic lodge quarters leased for three years
Trustees of Alpine Masonic lodge leased corner downstairs for three years. Carl Shults announced remodeling includes new hardwood floor walls repainted and front remodeled with a new awning. A new business is to open after work finishes though details were not learned. R W Peters leads the remodel with Ray Spence painting. A car fire behind William Drier’s automobile in Anaconda extinguished with a milk gallon at hand.

New Automobile Firm To Open In Alpine At College Avenue
H. Van Fossan and associates secure a Dodge and Plymouth franchise for Van Van Motors to open this week in Alpine. The business will operate temporarily in the Tesk Building on West College Avenue with P. L. Avant as service department head. They plan a full parts stock and complete service for Dodge and Plymouth. The Van Fossans recently lived in Alpine after years with Brewster County Motors, where he sold cars and she managed the office.

Rain and showers covered much of the Big Bend and Davis area over the past week. In Mathon, about one inch accumulated, with another 2.1 inches noted in the Rose region, contributing to the month’s total. Alpine saw cool weather and moisture hints, while Western Washington remains the wettest U.S. spot with 150 inches annually.

Memorial Day Plans Change for June 1 Memorial Day parade and services
A change in plans moves Memorial Day services to Sunday June 1 to align with an inspection by Adjutant General J Watt Page and Maj Arthur Owens of Alpine. A 2:30 pm parade includes Third Battalion Companies A B C D and Sixth Battalion Companies A B C, with Fort D A Russell field pieces, Rotary and women’s clubs joining the march. About 600 troops from Alpine and nearby communities are expected, with pastors and visiting troops coordinated for the event.
