The First National bank plans a major modernization of its Holland avenue building formerly the Holland hotel. Exterior and interior work will be done with bids opened Monday June 14. Architect is W. J. Smith of Alpine.
Freda G. Powell associate professor of speech and dean of women at Sul Ross College has been awarded a Danforth Foundation scholarship to Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University. Twenty five scholarships nationally fund Christian Foundations for College Teaching program in New York City from July 6 to July 23. Powell joins other scholars chosen for genuine interest in Christianity and teaching effectiveness. John Lane visits Hobbs, New Mexico this week.
Two Sul Ross State College seniors were chosen as Man and Woman of the Year. Jim Stoicheff of Ellwood City Pennsylvania and Karen Keith of Dallas Texas received the honors. Keith is editor of The Sage and president of Kappa Delta Pi while Stoicheff edited The Skyline and co-edited the Brand. Both earned bachelor’s degrees at commencement and were named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Kelton Russell and James Hopkins anchor the Lobos in the all-Lone Star Conference nine with Russell as pitcher and Hopkins as outfielder. Ronnie Sizemore earns utility spot with multi position infield play, and Howard Snodgrass is named at third base. Sam Houston State leads with five selections.
Rex Ivey Jr. commissioner of Prec. 4 Brewster County seeks re election in a formal announcement this week He is unopposed in the July primary and pledges to serve the county’s best interests and appreciates Prec 4 citizens votes in the primary
The Southern Pacific railroad grants the city permission to draw water from two east town wells. Little usage occurs with diesel locomotives in service. Tests showed 150 gallons per minute potential. City plans to pump during peak consumption periods.
Rector Robt N MacCallum who has served the Episcopal church since last fall will leave due to illness. He and his family will move to Aberdeen Maryland to live with his brother when he is able to travel from Fort Stockton hospital. No successor named. Congregation mourns the departure of a highly praised pastor.
Andrew Crenan Hudson of Alpine earned a B S in Agricultural Administration and Hilliard Otis French of Big Bend National Park earned a B S in Civil Engineering at Texas A M graduation exercises held May 21.
Dan Hartnett age 25 from Marfa a Sul Ross College sophomore died in a local hospital from injuries after a Sunday night crash on U S Highway 67 one mile south of Shafter. His wife Mary Alice age 27 was critically injured and Andrea Hinojos suffered minor injuries. Hartnett a WWII veteran son of Fort Davis residents, died after the car overturned striking a rock. Funeral services were held in Marfa Wednesday afternoon.
Alpine High Bucks win Region II Interscholastic League baseball title by defeating Merkel 8 7 at Merkel last Saturday under lights and 24 8 at Kokernot Field Tuesday. Buck pitcher James Thomas started the first game, was relieved after a knock unconscious on a rough field, as Vicky Hernandez finished. Whisenant of Merkel struck out 14 but walked 13. Duane Smith and James Thomas led Alpine at the plate with multiple hits while errors late in the seventh inning cost Alpine three runs.
Local postoffice figures show four month receipts totaling 13 591 25 dollars, near 1953 levels. Box rents and timing of credits explain the apparent dips, with higher rents expected to offset shortfalls as the new postal year begins.
Fifty persons signed up for a Big Bend National Park visit from Dallas starting June 5. The caravan will stop at San Angelo for a night with Big Bend pictures and a review of J. O. Langford’s book Big Bend a homesteader’s story. Sponsored by the U S Highway 67 Association to promote travel on that route.
Local rainfall spread over a wide area with Alpine and surrounding ranches reporting varying amounts. Meriwether, Davidson, and McIntyre ranches logged multi inch totals while Fort Davis and McDonald Observatory noted lighter showers. Pierce Glass and Pierce Altuda ranches saw heavy downpours, and rains caused water over highways and some roadbed damage near Alpine.
Henry Bailey Motors expands to a modern Chevron Service station at 810 E Holland Ave opposite Motel Bien Venido. New and used cars will be on display with L. C. Bradford as manager and staff including Chas Goetting Ray Bradford and Hector Davis.
Alpine High School’s A Cappella choir and Speech department staged a Spring concert at Sul Ross College auditorium directed by Inda Benson Adams. Students performed original drama Dawn Distant with actors Jerry Bass Charlie Watson Bobby Carruthers Bobby Clanton and others.
Sul Ross College invites a large panel of education specialists to join the summer session as adjunct faculty for workshops clinics and conferences. First term runs June 2 to July 9 with June 1 registration and June 8 to June 17 band director workshops under clinicians Dr Walter Beeler and Ted Otis. Second term July 13 to August 20 features two educational tours earning six semester hours and the annual reading conference of the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading August 8 to 12 attended by over a thousand teachers.
Big Bend district hosts the Area II soil conservation supervisors gathering with expected 500 visitors from West Texas and families. Alpine chosen for 1954 site. Fort Worth Press awards contest prizes announced by editor Walter Humphries. Speakers include Henry Mills Jr. and officials from Sul Ross College and Big Bend National Park. A tour of the park follows Sunday.
L B Newberry age 73 prominent Chihuahua City businessman churchman and benefactor died at his home last Thursday after a six week illness. He lived in Mexico 43 years, first as a Methodist missionary then as a church lay leader and local leader in Alpine. He belonged to the Alpine chamber of commerce International Peace Park commission and was a longtime friend of the Elliott family of Alpine.
Lt Ha D Smith son of Mr and Mrs Victor J Smith Alpine released to inactive duty and returns to Goodfellow field San Angelo. A World War II era veteran recalled in 1952 served a year at Corpus Christi NAS and a year aboard USS Salerno Bay. He resumes role as weather instructor and training officer in the Manpower Management division at the base.
Twenty five Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association members from Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio counties met at the Holland hotel to plan the quarterly convention in Alpine June 18 19 hosted by Sul Ross College with Dr. Bryan Wildenthal SR president welcoming. Committees named include Steve Stumberg chairman Miles Pierce entertainment Jimmie Pate finance Frank Newsom Ralph Meriwether Ollie Cox Vernon McIntyre food Frank Hofens reservations. Over 200 members expected.
Drilling was resumed Tuesday at the Plymouth Oil Co test on the Kokernot ranch about 25 miles north of Alpine in Jeff Davis county after a shutdown of several weeks to regain circulation. Drilling reached 1894 feet and was progressing satisfactorily today.
