Summer term at Sul Ross opens with large enrollment
Sul Ross college began its summer term Tuesday with a capacity crowd of students and officials predicting the largest summer session in years. Housing is filled. about 60 apartments and rooms were filled elsewhere in the city. The student body is now largely upperclassmen and graduates, with around 100 master's degrees anticipated. About 75 percent of students are Texas public school teachers, many from warmer regions, and roughly 175 new attendees joined Sul Ross this summer seeking the climate. Officials estimate 700 students will be registered by completion.

Approximately 150 people attended the Area II meeting of soil conservation supervisors at Kokernot lodge. Awards honored outstanding farmer of the region Roy Jacoby and comeback winner Elmer Steiner, with other honors for homeworker Mrs. Herbert Mears and non farmer F. E. Beecroft. Six West Texas high school students received conservation essay awards. The Big Bend SCD hosted the meeting with Lon Gar as toastmaster.

The Big Bend Trail Association departs Dallas tomorrow with 50 or more members to tour the Big Bend and Davis Mountains area. The air conditioned bus will stop in San Angelo for a Big Bend pictures show and a review of J O Langford's Big Bend homesteader story. The party will stay in Alpine and Big Bend park, tour the park Tuesday, visit Presidio and Ojinaga, dine in Ojinaga, stay in Marfa Tuesday night, visit Fort Davis and McDonald Observatory, drive the scenic loop, swim at Balmorhea State Park, and finish at Fort Stockton to promote travel along U S 67.

New Pastor for First Christian Church Named
Rev Robt E Peterson chosen as pastor of the First Christian church after a Sunday board meeting. He earned a degree from Brite College and Bible, TU, and will assume duties on or before July 7 with his wife and two daughters joining from Washington state. Improvements on Highways in This Area Listed
The Texas Highway Commission approved the 1955 56 building program detailing improvements on U S Highways 90 and 67 and State Highway 118 in this area. Projects include five miles on Highway 90 toward Marathon, three miles west of Sanderson, eight miles on Highway 118 from Alpine north to Jeff Davis county line, and widening bridges on Butcher Knife draw Adobe walls canyon and Box canyon creek. U S 67 will gain 9 1 miles of work from Rankin west and widen sections to Crockett county line and U S 290 junction east of Fort Stockton. Construction will begin topping the road from Highway 17 to the Yucca council Boy Scout camp, then from Highway 118 to the Girl Scout camp at Mitre peak.

Heavy Downpour Hits Hovey Area Nearing Alpine
A heavy rain last Saturday night near Hovey north of Alpine flooded the Santa Fe railroad and nearby highways. The U S 67 road to Hovey and dam structures on ranches were damaged as nearly 2 inches fell locally. Alpine reported no significant moisture, while dry winds persisted and water restrictions were lifted temporarily as reservoirs ran low. Pumping began at two Southern Pacific wells producing about 100 gallons per minute, but demand outpaced a 900000 gallon daily city capacity.

4H Encampment Set for Alpine This Weekend
About 100 4 H club boys from District 6 across 20 West Texas counties gather at Sul Ross College in Alpine for the annual encampment. Activities include swimming bowling baseball rifle shooting and meals at the college cafeteria with a one night campout on the Tippit ranch north of Alpine. Roughly 20 county agents will attend.

Alpine High School seniors and five sponsors completed a Mexico trip to Monterrey. The 28 students stayed at the Ambassador hotel, explored old cathedrals and modern buildings, rode burros to Horsetail Falls, and swam at a tropical resort. They learned local money basics amid tips mishaps, ending with cheers of Viva Monterrey and Adios Amigos.

Game Department Sets Public Meetings in Trans-Pecos

Southern Pacific seeks to cut terminal points in Texas plan
E A Craft of Southern Pacific said the Texas Railroad Commission was informed of a plan to discontinue Sanderson and Valentine terminals and create a new Alpine terminal. Del Rio would remain, reducing divisions from three to two and speeding cross state freight and passenger runs. The auto effect would cut crew needs and boost transcontinental competitiveness with Del Rio to Alpine and Alpine to El Paso as key segments. A hearing is expected to be set by the Railroad Commission to review the petition and hear opposition.
