Riess Well Dry Ice Test Promises Vast Alpine Water
Stephan Riess of Simi, California tested Alpine’s well by placing 1000 pounds of dry ice. He claims the water remained warm at 80 degrees and suggests migratory underground flowing water from a large crevice at 1165 feet. Riess estimates 2000 to 3000 gallons of water per minute if developed, with the outlet crevice sealed to permit rise and production. Mayor White and city officials observed the test.

The hospital project approved by Brewster County voters in October 1954 will be funded with 200000 dollars from the Federal Hill Burton Act. A hospital board will run operations once formed by the Commissioners Court before completion. The city will gather engineering data on Riess well and present options to Alpine residents. Riess, who tested with dry ice for twenty years, explained the method and its implications for underground water testing and gas release. This is Riess’s first Texas water well stake, with further follow-up planned.
