Only $10,000 Needed To Insure Alpine Clothing Factory

Alpine business leaders urge residents to fund a new clothing factory with a $10,000 balance to complete capitalization of a $30,000 project. The plant would start with 50 seamstresses, rising to 100, and produce children’s clothing for a San Antonio buyer, delivering a minimum $104,000 yearly payroll and boosting Alpine’s growth. A Monday night meeting at the Chamber of Commerce in Alpine will answer questions as the town races to meet a June 5 deadline.

Charles Thomas West Texas ranchman dies in San Angelo

Charles Thomas a well known West Texas benchman died in a San Angelo hospital early yesterday. He was husband of Mrs Stather Elliott Thomas a Sul Ross State College Spanish teacher. Funeral services set for 4 pm Saturday at the Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Alpine High School to Graduate 34 Seniors May 30

Alpine High School will award diplomas to 34 seniors in a May 30 ceremony. The processional will be by Betty Vogt, invoca tion by John Hayslip, salutatory by Meriell McCollum, redictory by Gladys Cowell, and diplomas handed by J. C. Coleman. Lazaro Valenzuela will give the benediction and Vogt will play recessional. Baccalaureate in the auditorium at 7 pm Sunday May 27 with Rev. Clanton Newbill delivering the sermon. Marathon High Commencement Set Tonight

Delvert Downing of Midland will give the principal address at Marathon High School graduation tonight. The program opens at 8 p.m. with Fiume March, led by the instrumental choir under W. C. Powers. Speeches follow by Jose Cordova, Ray Graham, Bill Green, and Gayle Coe. Diplomas are awarded by Supt. Earl Bland. Eldon McGonagill will sing End of a Perfect Day with Mrs. Earl Clark. The program ends with Auld Lang Syne.

Last Rites Held Sunday For Anton J Burgard

Funeral services for Anton J Burgard aged 67 were held at 3 pm Sunday at Livingston Funeral Home. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born September 9 1889 in Nyack New York he retired as a pattern maker for Wright Aircraft Corp and had lived in Alpine the last decade. Survived by wife Marie L Burgard and one sister in New York.

City Plans Tests Of Riess Well For Water Output

Dowell Inc representatives from McCamey will test the Riess water well in Alpine tomorrow morning to determine water flow. City officials cited findings of geologist Jim Stallard and Riess tests, noting potential water availability amid tests and a prior carbon dioxide ice placement in the well.

Young Feeders Win Highland Hereford Checks

Ten checks were presented to Highland Hereford youth at a Saturday noon steak fry on the Pete Kennedy Ranch between Alpine and Marfa. Members of the Brewster Jeff Davis County 4 H Club received awards for state stock show success, led by Dodie Tate of Marathon with a 35 dollar prize and grand championship at the Big Bend Stock Show. Other winners include Joe Ramos Jr Alpine Courtney Mellard Mary Lane Mellard Tom Robison Jim Carr Bill Gearhart Rick Tate Martha Ann Gearhart and club members who won first in El Paso for a group of five Hereford steers. Frank Newsom Alpine presented the awards with Pete Kennedy chairing the publicity committee and association officials attending.

Alpine Country Club to Open Heated Pool on Saturday

The Alpine Country Club will open its heated pool this Saturday May 26 as announced by the Rules Committee. Non members may join for the season upon recommendation, paying a $50 usage fee. Mrs Vernon McIntyre has returned from Cameron after a several weeks visit and attended Grand Opera in Dallas.

Brewster County Seeks Hospital Bids by June 19

Brewster County will open bids June 19 for a 400000 dollar hospital project after final plans were approved in Austin. County Judge Felix McGaughy stated specifications have been sent to many contractors and can be obtained from Davis and Foster in the Mills Building, El Paso.

Ted Weems to Play in Alpine at Country Club Dance

Ted Weems and his world famous band will perform at the Alpine Country Club for a club members and guests dance on Wednesday night May 30. Tickets cost $19 a couple for members and guests, and $9 a couple for high school student children of members. The 13 person group includes two female vocalists and one male singer. Tickets are on sale after noon today at Forchheimer's La Bett Motor Co Betty Holland in Harry Carpenter's office and at the Country Club from 4 p.m.

Lions Name Lane Best Soil Conservationist

Alpine rancher Joe Lane was named Best Soil Conservationist of Brewster County by the Alpine Lions Club at a Tuesday meeting. Lamar Kay, chairman of the Lions agricultural committee and Soil Conservation Service member, presented the plaque as Lane expressed appreciation for the recognition.

Morelock Books Donated to Sul Ross College Library

Sul Ross State College honored Dr Horace W Morelock by receiving his extensive book collection in a special library room. The Morelock memorial collection, started by Dr Morelock at age 15 with The Story of the Bible from his mother, will serve as a lasting tribute to the former president emeritus and his family.

Welcome Rains Cover Big Area

Rains soaked a wide district across the Big Bend and Davis Mountain country on Tuesday and Wednesday. Measurements ranged from .16 inch at Sul Ross State College to 61 inch at Kokernot Field, with Alpine reporting the heaviest falls in some locales and hail accompanying the showers. Terlingua Creek rose as the Big Bend National Park logged 9 inch at Headquarters and 8 inch in the Basin.
