A letter from Eliza beth and Howard Seymour of Ravenna praises The Avalanche for fostering community ties and Texas spirit. They plan a spring visit to Alpine, express admiration for ranch news and Jean's Jottings, and thank local readers and contributors.
The Riess water well on Kokernot Hill to be tested Saturday with 1000 pounds of dry ice under Stephan Riess of Simi California. Mayor Hugh White and the City Commission arranged the visit, with Riess arriving at 4 pm by Trans Texas plane. Costs total 14 605 dollars to date with city funding 8870 and private donations.
Troop No. 41 will hold a cake sale on Saturday May 19 starting at 9 in Adams M System Grocery. Proceeds benefit troop activities and community projects.
The Clip and Brand Club of Sul Ross honored Big Bend soil district supervisors Bill Sohl C F Cox Neville Haynes George Mills and Jimmy Pate along with outstanding conservation rancher Joe Lane and SCS workers Lamar and others at a banquet. The district was named best in the state in the Fort Worth Press Save the Soil Contest.
Funeral arrangements were pending for A J Burgard who died in his sleep Wednesday night or Thursday morning. His body was found Thursday morning. His widow, Mrs Burgard, was at her ailing mother’s bedside in New York and is due to arrive by plane today. Arrangements were pending with Livingston Funeral Home.
County, state and federal authorities meet in Austin today to finalize plans for the Brewster County hospital a 400000 project. County Judge Felix McGaughy Commissioners Lee Smith and Tom Yardro attend. State Health officials provided 64 plan changes and Dr Dean Winn urged swift cooperation to start construction at the earliest time.
A Dale Carnegie Class No 1 graduation will be at 7 p m Tuesday May 22 in the Holland Hotel with 90 to 100 attendees. Over 40 Alpine and Marfa residents completed the 14 week course sponsored by Alpine Rotary Club. Guests will be hosted by instructor H Edward Fee of El Paso at $2 per plate, reservations via Tom Stowell at First National Bank by Saturday noon. All graduates will speak briefly. A second Carnegie course demonstration will be at 1 30 p m Friday May 25 in Alpine Community Center open to the public.
Carl Runge, noted jurist from San Angelo and former president of the Board of Regents of Texas State College for Women, will be the commencement speaker for Sul Ross State College on Sunday May 20. One hundred eleven graduates will receive degrees, including 12 from Alpine. The ceremony includes processional, invocation by Rev. Gene Brice, college choir, Runge's address, degree conferrals by Dr. Bryan Wildenthal, Alma Mater, and recessional.
Dr. Toe Wright county health officer reports over 800 rabies vaccine doses distributed in Brewster County as part of an anti rabies drive. Ranchers placed a bat at water holes and several foxes and other animals were killed. The effort targets foxes with house to house canvassing by the city progressing well. Most dogs and cats have been vaccinated or will be destroyed.
Cub Scout Troop 141 will hold a father son breakfast at the first roadside park west of Alpine on Highway 90 at 6 30 a m Saturday Cubmaster Charlie Hunter reports each Cub brings foot and cooking utensils for his father father and son will cook and eat together a community coffee pot will be available followed by a short program and awards presentation
State Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America will hold a meeting at the Scout Ranch north of Fort Davis Saturday afternoon. A barbecue will be served from 5 to 6 30 p.m. Those interested in Scouting are invited to attend.
Alpine's International baseball club will meet a team from Valentine at 3 pm Sunday at Kokernot Field. Valentine’s lineup includes players from Marfa Fort Davis and Valentine. They split with Laughlin AFB at Del Rio last weekend losing 9-6 on Saturday and winning 13-8 on Sunday. Jordan lost the first tilt and Frank Krhut won the second.

Alpine High Bucks face Pecos Eagles in a twin bill at Ko Kernot Field this afternoon with a 1 pm start for game one and game two immediately after. Alpine seeks to clinch the district crown after a Pecos playoff win and a days-old Sanderson victory.
In the May 14 19 issue of My Weekly Reader distributed to grammar schools nationwide, a front page story titled Chief Alstate Has Visitors covers Big Bend National Park on the Texas southwest edge. The piece notes thousands will visit this new park this summer and mentions a ridge line where Chief Alstate appears.
An adequate supply of saver for operation of a clothing factory in Alpine is available, with 14 sewing machines now in use in the Hill Building. More applicants from Alpine, Marathon, Marfa, Fort Davis and surrounding area are being sought, to register at the Hill Building headquarters starting 8 am Monday. The fund drive shows good results. financing must be completed before production begins. A minimum of 50 workers would be employed, yielding at least $2,000 weekly payroll. Financial drive leaders are Dick Rogers, Jim Casner, Gene Hendryx, Forrest Walker, Jim Francois, and Paul Foreheimer.
William Benjamin Fuller, an Alpine resident for over a century, died at home Sunday May 19. Funeral services were held May 14 at Livingston Funeral Home with Rev. Newbill officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include his widow Minnie Johnson Fuller, two sisters Ada Blevins and Pearl Pulliam, a brother Verge Fuller, and numerous relatives. Born March 18, 1869 in Beeville Texas, he moved to Alpine in 1902 and worked for Captain James and on the A. A. Murry Ranch. He delivered clothes for Wade Laundry for many years. Married to Minnie Johnson in Uvalde in 1908.
A four hour test near Alpine’s Hovey area shows the David McGill Ranch well pumping 800 gallons per minute with observers predicting up to 1000 gpm. The well lies about a mile west of a 1200 gpm Grant Bros. well used to irrigate land farmed by Clarence Hord Jr.
Olin W. irasx 03 of Phoenix Arizona died in a local motel Wednesday morning with his widow present. He is survived by a son Lt. Trask stationed at Randolph Field. Livingston Funeral home sent the body to Phoenix Thursday evening.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 7207 sponsorship drives 193 new subscribers for The Alpine Avalanche. Pablo Martinez, a Texas Highway Dept employee, sold 76 subscriptions in Alpine and Marathon and won a table model radio. The VFW share from the $1 six month subs totals $96.50 for civic projects. The Avalanche has served Brewster County for about 65 years.
