Marathon area reports show Mrs. Lillian Sampie visiting from Wink and former Marathon resident Lindsey attending Marthon high school events. Bridge club dessert evening hosts prize winners while birthday celebrations for Tommy Jane Stewart mark a community turnout.
Hidalgo Ward P T A met on Tuesday March 11 with Mrs Petra Cordova in charge. The third grade presented a fine program and the PTA bought two records for dances to be led by the children at the Adams and May programs. The next meeting was set for 7 30 p m. The fourth grade won $5 for most mothers present. refreshments were served by Luisa Qu ezeda, Rose Ramirez, Juana Rippe, Bonnie Renteria, and Betty Ralero. Mrs Mally Perry of Alpine donated a book to the Matern library. Mr and Mrs David Combs of San Antonio visit related ranch interests. Supt and Mrs Earl Bland attended a teachers meeting in El Paso. Bro F W Parnell is in Sheffield for a Baptist meeting. during his absence Bro Clayton Wagner of Van Horn will preach at Marathon Baptist church. Clinton Ritchey sss trip to El Paso. Mr and Mrs Raymond Stuart and children of Rankin visited. The Second grade welcomes Carolyn McAdams back after illness. Betty Colston from Fort Stockton joined the First grade. Fifth and Sixth grades held elimination contests for the Interscholastic League Spelling meet. contestants include Jean Nutt, Sandra Stumberg, and Irene Garcia as alternates. Some students plan to try tennis. health unit studied in science. Mrs Rau's Sixth and Seventh grade Teen-Age Habit club met Monday March 17 with President Jimmie Meeks. The program featured a quiz contest won by Isidora Aguilar who earned a prize.
In Midland, 511 head sold at Midland Livestock Auction Co on Thursday March 13. Stocker calves scarce. 311 lb heifers at 96.50. 655 lb white-faced steer yearlings bid to 31.75. Stocker steers 33 to 87, yearlings 29 to 32, heifer yearlings 28 to 31. Stocker cows 18 to 23, cow and calf pairs 220 to 287. Butcher steers 31 to 82.50. Top lot: 21 head from John Haley Jr. at 31.40 average, up to 32.78. Fat calves 32 to 34, mediums 20 to 32, canners 14 to 19. Bulls 23 to 26. Remark about busy work vs duties ends.
