A WWI veteran from Alpine, John W. Gillett, is back in service as commander of a Military Police company. In a local report, he describes leading, learning administration, and maintaining discipline, reflecting pride in his unit and its non commissioned officers. He previously served at Fort Sam Houston and Freeport Texas, and is a charter member of the Alpine American Legion.

Sul Ross college opens its summer session with strong attendance expected. Dormitories and cottages report brisk demand as classes begin tomorrow. Alpine Man Buys Ranch Near Devil's River Area
Jimmy Logan of Alpine announced this week that he bought a 9.4 section ranch northeast of Comstock on Devil's River, formerly owned by L. M Prater, plus all livestock and moving yearling ewes from Ratkin to the ranch. The Devil's River ranch will be operated for Mr. Logan by Mr. Bridges. Carl Thain takes civil service post as estimator and planner in naval machine shops for Panama and plans to travel from Brownsville to Panama to report for duty.

Shearing in Hilands Indicates Rising Rates and Volume
Fort Davis reports a shift from one shearer crew to five or more machines in the Davis mountains area. Each sheep paid 8 brass for a five cent half, with machine owners receiving 14 cents per sheep and shearers 8 cents. Fleeces average over nine pounds in Highlands, where cooler weather yields larger yields. The job remains the hardest work in the field, requiring the shearer to bend over continually.

New Water Well To Be Completed

Alpine resident J W Micou dies after long heart illness
J W Micou age 82 longtime Alpine resident since 1908 died at home in South Alpine after a heart attack of about ten days. Born in Mississippi November 8 1889 he lived in Knox and Hutchison counties before moving to Alpine where he ran a truck farm. Survived by widow six daughters a brother and three grandchildren Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with interment in Elm Grove cemetery.

Heavy rains sweep Fort Davis amid fierce storm
Fort Davis endured a rare storm Sunday night with vivid lightning and thunder. Rain totals reached 0.67 inch for the day, adding to May’s 0.85 inch for a May total of 1.52 inch. Floodwaters flowed across Merrill and Espy flats toward Marfa, with reports of higher rainfall at the Smith ranch. A consignment of ewes at Joe Espy’s place perished from the cold waters. Sheriff Clarence Hord and wife waded through floodwaters around 10 pm. Clinton Carroll, formerly of Crane, departed for Great Lakes Naval Training Station after reporting at the Dallas Naval Reserve, to begin six weeks further training.
