Brewster county nears a $1500 fundraiser goal for the USO. As of Wednesday, contributions totalled $1296.21 with Marathon contributors adding $2124.5. Dr. Berkeley and committee members urge continued donations and list many supporters from Alpine and Brewster. Baccalaureate and graduation plans at Alpine High include 40 plus diplomas, with multiple honors and athletic achievements noted.
The move relocates MOVES offices from the Holland hotel building to the Fuller building effective June 1. New quarters are located to the left at the top of the stairs.
Pacific island surveyors say 2500 tons of rubber may be available. Rancher K Cooperrider and Matt Culley report learning of a 20 year old sale of thousands of guayule seedlings to the Japanese. Texas sources note processing once existed near Marathon. Arizona and New Mexico guayule stocks are insufficient for harvesting.
Jesus Cobos Sr., 67, prominent Alpine Mexican, died Friday morning in Fort Stockton hospital after an operation the day before. Born in Chihuahua, he lived in Alpine since 1888 and worked in ranch tank and fencing construction. He is survived by his widow, 10 children including three sons in the army, four brothers and four sisters. Funeral Saturday at the Catholic church, Rev. Francis Juania officiating. interment in Tocа cemetery.
The Alpine chamber of commerce led a publicity effort sending stories and pictures to 100 Texas weekly newspapers to showcase the Big Bend park area. Glenn Burgess said the material, identical to a page feature in The Avalanche, highlights summer travel as tire shortages limit long trips. The region is gaining favor as a vacation destination near Davis Mountains.
Thomas Funk, long time employee of Alpine Telephone, leaves today for Austin then flies to Fort Monmouth New Jersey for a short U S Army Signal Corps training course. He will be commissioned as a second lieutenant. He is accompanied to Austin by his mother Mrs W H Funk and his sister Mrs Ford Corkran of Austin who has been visiting recently.
The Mn Auxiliary reported $133.18 from Poppy Day sales last Saturday. Fort Davis raised $18.28 and Marathon $37, with the disabled veterans making the poppies. After expenses the Auxiliary netted $108.43 and thanked local citizens for support.
FORT DAVIS May 27 Plans call for a seal coating on the asphalt highway from Fort Davis toward Alpine to the county line. Start date depends on material availability, with a long-awaited widening of four feet on each side shelved for now. Shoulder reconditioning has been underway in recent weeks.
Dan Sheffield a 44 year old Alpine Negro died suddenly last Sunday morning after weeks of illness. A West Texas resident for 17 years he worked as a cafe chef in Alpine and El Paso. Survived by his widow two step-daughters and other relatives funeral services were held Monday at the Chii church with Rev E B Isaacks officiating and interment at Eli Grove cemetery.
City calls an election to approve the issuance of ten thousand dollars in bonds to buy training school land. 46 seniors at Sul Ross College receive degrees in a Wednesday commencement with Rev. Richard Irving delivering the address. Summer session opens June 5 with expanded faculty and visiting instructors from Texas Tech, University of Mississippi, and other institutions.
The Third Battalion staff of the Texas Defense Guard is reorganized this week by Commander Major Arthur E. Owens. New appointments include Jarvis Robinson as detachment commander, A. T Barrett in charge of communications and intelligence, and Paul Vogt as supply officer. Other staff: Captain Cecil Duncan personal officer, Capt. J.B. Wright medical, L. C. Pope dental, Captain Fred E. Rogers chaplain, Lt. Glenn Burgess operation and training.
Alpine city commissioners set a June 18 election to issue 10 000 dollars in bonds for acquiring one third of 2 580 acres near Alpine to host an air training school authorized by the War Department. Marfa and Presidio County will share the remaining two thirds. The project, valued under three million dollars, will be supervised by the Albuquerque district office and located about one mile west of the Santa Fe underpass on highway 90.
Scattered rains and showers fell across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains area last week marking the first moisture in months. Falls brought relief to ranchers as some dry tanks filled, with good rains reported in southern Brewster County localities including Maravillas Creek rising. Heavy hail damaged Bird Apple Orchard at Fort Davis, while Alpine valley saw light showers totaling about 3.2 inches per government gauge at Sul Ross. Paisano section west of Alpine received heavy rain with Paisano Creek overflowing.
