Organization of the Brewster County Eagle club was perfected at a meeting last week. The group will operate within 100 miles of Alpine to control eagles and other predators that threaten lambs deer and antelope fawns. President Joe Parker announced state funding of 1200 dollars annually plus member dues. Dues vary by stock, with ranchers paying up to 250 dollars and cattlemen 60 dollars yearly. Mrs. Connie Segrest of Waco and Miss Dorothy Telott of San Antonio were treated at a local hospital after an automobile accident on the Big Bend park road about 20 miles south of Marathon. Segment notes Mrs Segrest with cuts and Telott with a broken arm. Mr. Segrest traveled from San Antonio to be with his wife.
City School Supt. Dick Bankhead receives word that his nephew C. L. Bankhead Jr., 21, of Lamesa Texas, is missing after the battle of Java. He sailed from San Francisco December 5 and was at sea en route to an undisclosed destination when Pearl Harbor attack occurred.
President Roosevelt set June 30 for the fifth 18 and 19 year old registration completing the 18 to 65 man power canvas. A county scrap drive runs June 18 to July 1 with ranchers urged to deliver scrap to Marathon or Alpine yards for Red Cross donations and war effort support. Fort Davis reports good ranges, steady markets, and beef and wool prices amid tax considerations.
County Chairman B F Berkeley announced that contributions in the past week raised the county USC total to 1831.21 against a 1500 quota. Rev Francis Juaniz announced the cornerstone laying for the new Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church to be held Sunday at 5 30 p m with Bishop administering confirmation. Rev Gregory Terre of Monahans will deliver the sermon as an expected large crowd attends.
Game wardens report increased numbers of antelope, mule deer, and mountain sheep in the Trans-Pecos region after reducing golden eagle predation. The plan targets some eagles to restore balance, while bald eagles remain protected.
A drive for scrap rubber is launched in Texas. County Judge R B Slight receives word from George B Butler of the Texas Salvage committee in Austin. Governor Stevenson asks all citizens to bend every effort to collect scrap rubber so there is enough to provide tire material and possibly avoid gasoline rationing.
W Rales of war bonds and stamps in the county for the month of June totaled only $2950 up 12 mid week. G W Baines, chair man of the county committee, stated yesterday. The county's quota for June is $8900, leaving about two thirds of the amount yet to be raised. May sales reached $27,907.65, more than double the $11,800 quota. Baines said no canvass would be made to raise June or subsequent quotas and urged Brewster county citizens to help meet the monthly goal.
Alpine Super Market announced a complete rearrangement of fixtures this week. The changes aim to improve display of goods and enhance service for patrons.
Fort Davis reports the $12,000 Baptist church is half finished with rock walls completed to height, builder Ralph Peters signaling completion this week. Pastor Rev. H C Goodman notes plans to furnish by September and corner stone laying aimed for late July. About $9,000 has been paid to date with furnishings adding roughly $3,000. Auditorium seats 200 and a baptistry will be visible from the pulpit area.
City residents go to the polls Monday to decide on issuing 10 000 dollars in bonds to fund the purchase of land for a flying school. The Alpine Rotary seeks a photo and address list of Brewster County servicemen for a project, requesting postcard sized images or suitable alternatives, to be sent to Dr Joel Wright or The Avalanche office.
The Bloys Camp Meeting Association announces its annual June gathering at the encampment grounds on Sunday June 21. Rev Richard G Irving and Fr Davis supervise. Sunday school at 9 am worship at 11 am, basket dinner at noon, afternoon business meeting. all friends invited.
The Big Bend Medical Society and Auxiliary will meet at the Holland hotel in Alpine on June 16. Dr. Joel Wright, secretary, announced a 7 pm dinner followed by a program featuring Dr. Edward Richey of Shafter on Medical Customs In India and Dr. W. E. Lockhart of Alpine on Digitalis In Heart Disease. The Doctor and the War Bond drive ends the event with a round table discussion.
Washington reports the first federal use tax on automobiles due July 1, with expectations of about 180 million dollars total. Vehicle owners had purchased stamps last February at two dollars each, valid only until July 1, amid protests and calls for repeal.
In Jeff Davis Courtroom Major K W Linde of the Texas adjutant general’s office urged vigilance and an active Defense Guard. Alpine Volunteer Fire department members Bill Dorris and J C Coo ley with marshal attended a state meeting of volunteer firemen in Corpus Christi this week. Mr and Mrs Laurence Kidwell and baby visited his parents at Mineral Wells last weekend.
