Rio Grande Canyon Expeditions Through Santa Elena
A retrospective on early exploration of the Rio Grande canyons recalls expeditions from 1924 to 1945. Notable participants include Henry Webb James Metcalf and Skaggs, with diverse craft from scows to maguey rafts, navigating shifting waters and non navigable sections. A Coast Guard plane observed the journeys while later trips featured a 21 mile solo swim by Burwell Boudreaux and a fatal canyon incident in 1938.
