Alpine Opportunity Day Kicks Off With 14 Merchants
The Alpine Business Promotion Committee of the Chamber of Commerce launches a three day sale Friday Saturday and Monday June 3 4 and 6 offering shoppers lower prices and quality merchandise. Free parking is granted for the event and extra Avalanche copies are sent to Sul Ross College married students to acquaint them with local merchants and Alpine values. Future promotions are planned for July 1 2 and August 5 6 and 8.

Free Parking Period Voted By City Council Unanimously
The City Council approved free parking on the first Friday Saturday and Monday of each month for three months overriding Mayor W E Lockhart. Councillors Dorothy McBride John W O Donnell Alberto Rojo and C D Mc Collister voted yes while Homer Hudgins was absent. CofC manager Phil Ebensberger cited a petition from 22 merchants asking for the measure during Opportunity Days and asked the Chamber committee to report on business impact.

Theater group to meet Tuesday for summer plays
A college community summer theater group invites all interested people to a 5 30 p m meeting Tuesday June 7 in the Community Room of the First National Bank. Directors are E Clayton McCarty and Roy Lassiter Jr of Sul Ross State College. Plans include four plays per week in August at Kokernot Lodge outdoor theatre.

First Graders to Register for Head Start Next Monday
All students entering first grade next fall must register for Head Start on Monday June 6 at Central Elementary School. Registrations are accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Birth certificates are required. The eight week program runs June 13 to August 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A school bus will provide transportation where needed.

Runoff Saturday in Brewster County and nearby races
The Democratic Primary runoff will be held Saturday June 4 with one Brewster County race between Crawford Martin and Franklin Spears for state attorney general. In Jeff Davis County incumbent Tom Gray faces W F C for county judge. Alpine will host the sole Brewster polling place at the Brewster County Courthouse with regular polling in Marathon Terlingua and Big Bend NP. Twelve absentee ballots were cast in Brewster County.

Boreing Named Housing Director
Charlie Boreing has been named executive director of the Local Housing Authority. Neville Haynes told the City Council Tuesday that several sites for low cost and elderly housing had been tentatively selected while federal officials would visit Monday to inspect the site. Haynes discussed payments to be set by appraisers and noted the city would be reimbursed by the Local Housing Authority later. The council was reminded that terms for Johnny Sotello and Dr Mayron Shields expire July 6 1966, and terms for Haynes Reg Wotan and Harry Carpenter expire July 6 1967.
