Archive War: Texans Block 1842 Capital Archives Move
In 1842 Austin residents thwarted a move of government archives to Washington on the Brazos. Cannons fired, wagons fled, and the archives were recovered as Houston became the temporary capital. The incident ended with the government returning to Austin in 1843. The piece also notes Mrs. Mary Anny Scott's $1000 gift for religious reading material and Norman Falkner's claim as a one legged trick skater.
