Unvaccinated dogs after August 2 will be rounded up and disposed of.
Mrs. Fannie I. Carnes 83, lifelong Alpine resident since 1911, died last Thursday night after an illness of one week. Born June 4, 1858 in Evergreen, she was married to S. S. Carnes in 1879 and lived in San Jacinto, Wharton, and Orange before moving to Alpine. Surviving are three children P. S. Carnes L. T. Votaw and E. M. Middleton, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral Friday at 4:30 p.m. at her son R. S. Carnes home with Rev. Ray B. McGrew officiating. burial Elm Grove Cemetery. Livingston Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers listed.
East Texas Chamber of Commerce publishes in its Vacation issue a feature by Hubert M. Harrison on Big Bend National Park. The piece extols the park’s 7200 foot peaks, rugged canyons, and contrasts with East Texas scenery, noting state funds for national park purchase and cooperation with Mexico.
A call goes out from Sloan Matthews of the International Cowboys Assn for old-time riders with mounts and saddles for Alpine’s Community Day parade on Aug 8 and 9. About 40 riders have agreed with only 0 horses available, as families report a six year old boy lost since July 4 in Alpine’s weed filled jungle with authorities scrambling amid scare townwide.
Pecos county court seeks paving of 22 miles on highway 67 from Fort Stockton to the Brewster county line. A Texas Highway Commission hearing is set for July 31 in Austin with the full Pecos court and county representatives attending.
Walker Shorty Harrison 48 a pioneer Alpine area member died Monday night at his mother's home after more than two years of illness. Born August 9, 1893 in Carlsbad New Mexico he moved to Alpine in 1895 and spent years in cattle work. He served as a private at Camp Bowie Fort Worth during WWI before honorable discharge February 17 1919. His death leaves a void in ranching circles. City of Alpine seeks applicants to fill the late M H Moorman city secretary post. applications must be written and filed by July 25 1941 at 6 p.m. LB Star ns Mayor.
A total of 1212 pieces of old aluminum were gathered and stored in the large pen opposite the post office by Wednesday afternoon. A town canvass on Monday launched the drive to supply material for re processing. Boy Scouts on North Side and Tex Co staff assisted, with trucks from George Ingston and county and city commissions helping. The drive continues until next Tuesday and residents are asked to deposit aluminum in the pen or call city offices to arrange pickup.
