Brewster County joins a nationwide aluminum drive to support defense production. Alpine and Marathon coordination involves American Legion Boy Scouts and Texas Defense Guard with house-to-house canvassing and a central drop enclosure opposite Alpine post office for aluminumware donations. Proceeds go to the National Scrap Aluminum Fund for Civilian Defense costs and smelter payments by checks through federal banks.
The city commission invites written applications to fill the vacancy caused by the death of City Secretary M. H. Moorman. Submit by July 25, 1941 at 6 pm to the city office or to Mayor L. B. Starns.
Miss Connie Duncan of Alpine took second in the ladies’ match at the El Paso regional pistol shoot last weekend, losing by three points to Mrs. Hicks of Georgia, wife of a trick shooter and Remington representative. Duncan used a 38 caliber pistol while Hicks used a 22. Duncan also scored well among men contestants. State police of New Mexico and competitors from Colorado, Juarez and Austin attended.
A list of officials and locations from El Paso to Kerrville includes Col. W. B. Tut Rien and J. N. Edens among others. The fragmentary notice names several cities and organizations with dates in July, detailing appointments and committees across regions.
Alpine reports a brief shift to lighter rain and warmer days after a sequence of hot, dry weather. Over the past week two light showers dropped about 1.5 inches in total, ending a spell of higher temperatures across the Alpine section.
The Big Bend Medical Society met in Alpine Monday night as guests of Alpine doctors and heard a program on fractures and curvatures of the spine by Dr. Frank Goodwin of El Paso. It adjourned to meet August 19 likely at Indian Lodge in Davis Mountain State Park for a symposium on Medical Ethics and the regular program after dinner, with many state officials invited. The Big Bend society is the only one in the state to hold meetings through the year.
Alpine announces a civic parade to open Community Day on August 8. Parade plans were drawn up by the parade committee Sloan Matthews Jerry Starnes Mac MacMullan and E S Coleman with Nelson Lee at the chamber of commerce offices. No prizes for floats. youth groups and various organizations will participate. marching route ends in time for a barbecue.
Indiana University joined a cooperative plan with the University of Texas and the University of Chicago to operate McDonald Observatory on Mount Locke in West Texas. Indiana will gain 15 nights of access, full rights to photographic plates, and publication discussions for its researchers led by Prof. Frank K. Edmondson. The Davis Mountains site offers about 300 observing nights yearly and has made discoveries of gaseous iron and numerous white dwarfs since its May 1939 dedication.
The Texas Defense Guard announces a 7 30 p m parade Tuesday July 22 ending at the courthouse lawn to demonstrate old aluminum for public defense and drills. Afterward Special Agent D P Sullivan of the FBI will speak on how private citizens aid national defense.
Work on the recreational park beside the Locust swimming pool will begin next Monday afternoon. All boys and men wishing to help clear and develop the play area should meet at four o clock next Monday with shovels hoes and rakes.
Funeral services for M. H. Moorman city secretary who died from injuries in an Alpine area auto crash near Del Rio were held with S Rogers and M R Soileau officiating. Moorman a longtime Alpine resident since 1925 served 11 years as city secretary and was born December 8 1882 in Sipe Springs Comanche County. He married Bess Wilson July 16 1910 and had prominent involvement in Gorman business oil and banking circles before joining the state highway office in Alpine. He held high Masonic offices Shrine member and was Brewster county raft board chairman. Surviving daughters are Mrs Kenneth Starnes Tessa and Mrs Jack Walcher Ran.
City Secretary M. H. Moorman died in a Del Rio hospital at 2 40 a m last Sunday from injuries from a midnight accident about 18 miles east on U S highway 90. Moorman, driving with Wallace Sublett, was said to be traveling 55 to 80 mph when the car swerved and overturned. Sublett was injured but not seriously. A ranchman found the wreck and alerted Del Rio ambulance, with Moorman dying shortly after reaching the hospital.
Seventy five children were examined at the crippled children's clinic in Alpine Monday under the Alpine Rotary club and nearby clubs. Dr Joel Wright chaired the crippled children's committee and clinic director. Elizabeth Abbott aided by supervising the state's education division. Local Rotarians nurses case workers and county officials assisted. Alpine volunteers handled records and lunch for attendees. Guests included physicians from Alpine and nearby towns and representatives from the Child Welfare bureau Austin.
Fort Davis July 16 An order directed resident engineer Laurence E Wood to place a fan advertisement for bids on four additional miles of the Davis Mountains State Parks highway The order followed a survey and the local crew completed drafting in under three weeks working long days including Sundays The plans were sent to El Paso soon after completion indicating a record pace by the highway office
A drive to collect tinfoil for the U S defense program will start in Alpine in the coming days under the Auxiliary of the American Legion. People are asked to save any tinfoil for later collection efforts. Mrs A J Bierschwabe chairs the Auxiliary committee overseeing the drive.
