Paisano Baptist encampment opens with record attendance
The 21st Paisano Baptist encampment opened last Tuesday with about 1000 residents fed at supper, the largest opening-day attendance in the history of the encampment. About half the tabernacle attendees were first timers, from across the state and neighboring areas. A monument dedication to late founder and first president Rev R Millican is planned, with exact date pending press time. Attendance on Wednesday night reportedly grew beyond Tuesday, and Sunday is expected to be the peak day as the session runs through next Thursday.

Drilling To Be Resumed Today on Marathon Test
Drilling is set to resume today on the Marathon oil test at the De ele ranch near Marathon after a brief delay for repairs. A depth of 200 feet was reached earlier this month, heavier drill stems arrived for the rotary rig, and operators expect faster progress from now on. Chester Dewey, a well known Texas operator, is drilling the Sec. 43 4 GC&SF Ry. test, the county’s only active test at present.

Lost Boy Rescued From Alpine Jungle of Weeds
A six year old boy lost for over two weeks amid Alpine's jungle of weeds was found asleep in a giant sunflower tree by searchers from the Pacific Northwest. He described strange jungle sounds, Tarzan sightings, and his two week struggle to escape before being reunited with his parents. Citizens blamed property owners for weeds and urged prompt action ahead of Community Day.

Williams Variety Store Sold to Marfa Partners
Williams Variety store changed hands last weekend to C. Braunstein and L. Sagor of Marfa who will run Sago's Variety in Alpine starting Monday. Carl Williams, owner since opening in September 1939, will remain in Alpine for now. The Marfa partners also operate a new store there opened three months ago after moving from El Paso.

Campaign To Organize At Meeting In Alpine August 8
Fort Worth July 28 Plans for acquiring land for the Big Bend National Park will be formulated at a meeting of the Texas State Parks board and the Texas Big Bend Park association in Alpine on August 8. Representatives of the association invited. The 788000 acres required for the states first national park will be purchased starting September 1 when 31500000 appropriated by the Legislature becomes available. Frank D. Quinn and Harry Connelly conferred in Austin on the project. Amon Carter will cooperate to speed land acquisition for early development. Harold L. Ickes has indicated development laws are in making. The project is seen as a major economic boost via tourist facilities and attracting national visitors.

Violent Windstorm Hits Terlingua Area
A violent windstorm and heavy rain struck extreme southern Brewster county last Saturday afternoon. The roof of the Fulcher ranch house on Terlingua Creek was blown off and washed away by high waters. The bridge over Terling Creek was damaged by wind and flood.
