Fort Yea ton to be preserved as Texas Historic Monument
Historic Fort Yea ton near Presidio is slated for preservation through the efforts of T C Mitchell and Mrs J Shipman owner of Voice of the Mexican Border. The fort dating to around 1837 protected settlers along the Rio Grande before other forts were abandoned. Fort Davis Port Davis and others are noted, with calls to restore Port Davis as well. A Brashears family birth is reported in Sierra Blancas, and an airplane helped capture a wild stallion on a George Aldwell ranch near Fort Stockton. Two Detroit youths who stole a car near Pecos were captured, jailed, and later released on five year suspended sentences after a night spent in the Pecos jail.

Brewster County Cuts Operating Costs in 1983
Brewster county reduced expenditures in 1983 by 40 percent from the prior four year average. County Judge R B Slight cites a business like, non political administration and notes cooperation of county officials. Bonded debt fell by 25 500 with all interest paid 17 169 total 42 649 state paid 11 145 leaving 30 808 county paid. Outstanding scrip 22 575 issued 1982 paid in full now totals 53 473. 1933 scrip not yet called totals 23 107 89. No debts refunded in the year.

Poll Tax Records Show Low County Payments To Date
County records indicate 689 poll taxes paid so far with about 200 more due before the deadline. The tax must be paid to qualify for this year’s elections. precinct tallies include East and West 1, North Alpine, South Alpine, Terlingua, Marathon, and Dugout. Previous totals show 699 issued yesterday, with 1482 votes cast in the 1942 election, implying many voters have yet to settle poll taxes.

River Mexican in Serious Condition After Pistol Accident
A bullet from a small caliber automatic pistol struck Cortez in the abdomen during an accidental discharge at Boquillas on Tuesday afternoon. He is in serious, probably fatal, condition at a local hospital. Cortez is son-in-law of the Badas family who run a store at Boquillas and own a mine across the river in Mexico.

Marathon Man Dies Suddenly
Marathon man M H Jones aged 7 died at his home after a brief illness last Saturday. He had been sick for a year or more but showed no organ ic trouble he fought a hard battle and died a few hours after a severe heart attack. He was highly respected, a loyal husband and father, born April 3 1876 in Hunt County Texas, married Sept 13 1884 to Miss Prances McClinton. He lived in Marathon since 1906 and was a longtime member of the Methodist church.

Former Publisher of Avalanche Dies in Del Rio
William Walter Jenkins, 63, longtime newspaper editor and educator, died early Friday from heart complications. A Del Rio resident for 18 months, he previously lived near Georgetown and Austin. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Lander with Rev. Dr. Robert Gribble. burial at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Neal Macon. Jenkins, born in Joliville on the old Austin-Burnet road, spent his life in Texas and served as editor of the Williamson County Sun and Alpine Avalanche. He was county school superintendent for six years and later county auditor for nine years. He was married in 1901 to Blanche Mason. The obituary notes his roles as educator and newspaper man before retiring to Del Rio.

Pecos Rio Murder Case Dismissed After Appeal
SAN ANGELO Jan 20 Roger Thompson forty was freed from Tom Green county jail after murder charges in the Pecos river death of H M Polan were dismissed in Sterling City. Polan a Plent ywood gambler was found dead in the Pecos river. Thompson was sentenced to fifty years in May last year. the conviction was reversed and remanded by the state criminal appeals court in November for lack of corroboration of accomplice Pred Moutray. With no new testimony the case was dismissed. Moutray now serves a four year term for his guilty plea. Ruby Taggart, now Mrs Ben Turley of Tulsa Okla, was charged but charges were dropped last summer for lack of evidence.
