Cattle Sale to Mexico Under U S Mexico Loan Program

More than 500 to 700 Hereford range cows are sold by Big Bend ranchers to Mexican buyers led by the Arrieta Bros of Delicias Chihuahua. Buyers will ship cattle by stock car to Presidio then drive them eight days to Coahuila ranches. Bucks Clash With Fabens In Two Game Series

The Bucks open the Conference 7A schedule against Fabens in Alpine for a two game series tonight and tomorrow. The night’s game is the March of Dimes event with pledges of 2.75 per Bucks point to Brewster County March of Dimes. Next Tuesday the Bucks host Marfa Shorthorns, strengthened by Oscar Jiminez who became eligible Jan 16. The Bucks then travel to Sanderson.

Poll tax reminder for Alpine School Board election

Elvie Williams urged Brewster County residents to pay poll taxes by January 31 to vote. The Alpine School Board election is set for Saturday April 6, with terms for President J. C. Coleman and Member Edwin Fowlkes due to expire.

Alpine Trustees approve two teaching changes

The Alpine Board of School Trustees approved two teaching changes at the Tuesday meeting. Paul Hill of Alpine High English was granted sick leave with a fill-in for the year to be named. Lucille Clanton was named to replace Dorothy Leavitt at Centennial School while Leavitt resigns. The board also noted rising school fuel oil prices and listed panel members for the Texas Association of School Boards meeting in El Paso on February 9.

Old Alp-Inn Building Bought For Alamo Cafe

Frank Sanchez Jr. and Joe Sanchez purchase the old Alp-Inn building on Highway 90 West from T. A. Beard. They plan to move the structure to the southwest corner of the Jackson Field block to house the Alamo Cafe, currently two blocks east. The building, formerly Powell Radio Shop, will be moved in about 15 days from Fritz Weyerts.

Brewster County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to publish the county treasurer quarterly report in The Alpine Avalanche at 50 cents per column inch. The treasurer’s yearly report appears on page 9. The court also urged Governor Daniel to appoint Fred B. Glass to the State Highway Commission.

Feed Program Suspended in Brewster and Surrounding Counties

Emergency roughage feed program suspended in Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Presidio Counties due to lack of funds while the feed grain program continues. Federal support pays hay and roughage at 7.50 per ton and grain content feed at 1.50 per hundred, under Farmers Home Administration direction with Patrick F. Sullivan of Marfa as supervisor. Completion of funds expected within about ten days to resume the roughage program.

A weather report from Sul Ross State College notes a Thursday morning temperature of 15 degrees. The prior day saw a wide swing with a high of 83 and a low of 18, continuing freezing conditions throughout the day.

County and Alpine Join Paving Project This Summer

Brewster County and the City of Alpine join a voluntary paving plan to surface city streets at 70 cents per front foot for a two course asphalt layer. The county builds the base and the city hires an engineer. curbing costs fall to property owners. Four have signed up with twelve more expected.

Humble to Build New Station in Alpine

Humble Oil & Refining Co awarded a contract to Jim Corder of Marfa to construct a service station at the corner of Highway 90 and 7th Street in Alpine. Construction to start on or before January 21 with completion in about 90 days. The plant will sit on a 140 foot frontage leased from the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. A brick building will house two service bays and a 4 pump island. Station manager to be announced later.

Marathon Well Test For Dow Shows 30 GPM Water Flow

A water well drilled for Dow Chemical Co at Marathon produced 30 gallons per minute in a test run on Wednesday. Dow eyeing a possible fluorspar plant there, contingent on adequate water. More wells to be tested in the Marathon area.
