Butane Truck Fire Destroys Vehicle Near Alpine
An Alpine Butane Co. truck caught fire on the Fort Davis Highway near the old 7-Up plant. Driver Jess Newman escaped injury after fleeing the vehicle as flames engulfed the Chevrolet bobtail. The truck carried 50 gallons of butane. insurance covered the 1333 gallon capacity. Firemen extinguished the blaze and nearby grass fires. a telephone line was damaged. State Highway Dept blocked the area as onlookers gathered.

Milch Goes To Big Spring Hires Milchs New Athletic Director
Al Milch, former Sul Ross State College football coach, accepted the post as athletic director and head football coach of Big Spring High School. He will assume duties Feb 5, with his family moving to Big Spring. Moe Hedrick succeeds Milch at Sul Ross and will name football assistants soon.

Mrs. Fulcher 90 Buried After Brewster County Ranch Life
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Porter Fulcher pioneer Brewster County ranchwoman were held at First Christian Church with Rev. Gene Brice officiating. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery under Livingston Funeral Home. She died Sunday near Terlingua aged 90, survived by 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. the obituary notes her lineage and family history from Missouri to Texas. Witnesses and out of town relatives attended from Midland, San Angelo, El Paso, Terlingua and others.

Brewster County reports only 572 poll tax receipts sold by noon yesterday per Vic Heil of the tax collector. Deadline to pay and be eligible to vote in 1957 elections is next Thursday January 31. Last year 1522 receipts issued with 41 exemptions. senator race on April 2 and Alpine School Board election set for April 6.

Alpine FFA Lamb Feeders Sweep Five Classes at Stock Show
Alpine High FFA lamb feeders broke a 14 year drought by sweeping five of six classes at the 1957 Big Bend Stock Show. Eddie Fowlkes led multiple firsts and fed the two champion lambs breaking the show record. 160 lambs were exhibited. Raymond Thomas of Alpine won the capon class and grand champion trio.

Marathon Well Tests Show 200 GPM Capacity
Eldon McGonagill's water well on Marathon's outskirts yielded 200 gallons per minute in tests last weekend by Dixon Water System Co of Odessa for Dow Chemical Co. which evaluates a fluorspar plant. The 162 foot well near U S Highway 90 and Big Bend road produced 118 to 127 foot drawdown while another nearby well of 500 feet depth gave 50 to 60 gpm. Chris Gard of Austin supervised the tests.

Mothers' March On Polio Set For Monday Night
Mothers' March on Polio scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday Jan 28 in Alpine Marathon and Big Bend areas to conclude Brewster County March of Dimes activities. Mrs Estelle Martin directs the effort and church bells and fire sirens will signal residents to light porches and rooms. Volunteers will gather at the Holland Hotel after the march to submit their collections.

W G Henderson Laid To Rest In Alpine Funeral
Funeral services for Willie Gilmore Henderson 54 rancher and cotton farmer were held at First Methodist Church Alpine with Rev. Carl Lawson officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. He died after a two month illness in Fort Davis Hospital and is survived by wife Lillie, father W T Henderson, a son W G Jr, a daughter Drina, a brother J C Henderson, and a niece Mrs Pete Shouppe. Born June 12, 1902, he lived on the Henderson Ranch and operated farms in Mexico and Tornillo. His headquarters recently were in Torreon Mexico and he flew his own plane to operations.

Brewster County Gas Co ended its Alpine operations this week. Highland Butane Co purchased several storage tanks and cylinders. M W Brown, long time Brewster manager, returned to Odessa for the parent company. Ray LaBeff cited domestic butane at 13c per gallon in Alpine to match neighboring towns. Marfa and Fort Davis show 13c, Sanderson at 15c, prices vary with volume. Alpine Butane posted similar prices.
