First Josephine Linn Award Made In Orange
The Kiwanis Club of Orange Texas won the first Josephine Linn Community Service award for 1956 honoring outstanding service. Miss Linn former Colburn School principal in Orange died last year, sister to Anna D. Linn Margaret Linn and Mrs. George Brown of Alpine. The award will be given annually by the Community Service Council of Orange.

Alpine Chamber to Announce Officers at Banquet

Richard K Waldo Condition Improves For Ill Husband
The condition of Richard K Waldo, husband of former Alpine resident Alice Blucher, is improving after a serious illness. The Waldos live in Del Mar, California, with his office in San Diego. Mrs Blucher learned of his critical illness while the Bluchers were en route home from Christmas in Tucson and returned to be with the family.

Alpine High Bucks basketball sweeped Balmorhea series
Alpine High School teams swept Balmorhea in a district doubleheader here as the Fighting Bucks beat the Balmorhea squad Friday night. Alpine A boys won 62 32 and Alpine A girls edged Balmorhea 50 21 while the Alpine B teams posted 45 25 and 28 24 margins. Netgate receipts totaled 34.05. The Bucks then defeated Las Mesas 53 51 to place third in the Odessa Invitational, with Austin El Paso taking the title. Don Burgess led the Bucks in the opener with 30 points.

Big Bend Soil Conservation District Adds 14 Cooperators In Past Year
The Big Bend Soil Conservation District reports 88 percent of its 117 landowners are cooperators, with 3 911 560 acres total and 3 188 050 under agreement. In the past year 14 cooperators joined, covering 373 714 acres, plus 15 basic plans drafted and large conservation works completed. The district foresees adding six cooperators and expanding plans next year, with ranchers described as in fair-to-poor financial condition but able to continue planned practices. The district won first place in the Fort Worth Press Save the Soil and Save Texas contest. supervisors listed include James W. Pate and Neville Haynes.

Drilling Starts On Roberts Test In Sunny Glen West of Alpine
Paul Gooden, Alpine well driller, began a test hole on land owned by Mrs. Oscar Roberts in Sunny Glen west of Alpine. The City of Alpine holds water rights from Roberts under a 20 year agreement. If two wells yield 200 gallons per minute continuously, the city pays Roberts 2500 a year for 20 years, then water is free. The contract ends the first year if production fails to reach 200 GPM or the Roberts water is rejected by the Texas State Dept. of Health. The test well, about a half mile west of the Terry Well, is drilled 12 1/8 inches in diameter.

Brewster County launches its annual March of Dimes drive under county chairman Kenneth Stucke. Mothers March on Polio led by Gene Benson, Marathon drive head by R E Thompson, and 1000 coin collectors placed in Alpine schools. Points for Polio game at Alpine High Fabens Jan 18 raises funds, plus a Big Bend Sportsman Club shoot Jan 20 with proceeds to polio relief. The Brewster chapter reported 15 month polio treatment costs at 8500 dollars, with 3500 locally and 5000 from the National Foundation. Stucke urged prompt return of mail collectors.

Plans for the 13th Annual Big Bend Livestock Show in Alpine were finalized by 21 committee members. Fifteen baby beeves, 175 fat lambs, and 10 breeding sheep will be shown by Brewster and Jeff Davis Counties 4 H and FFA groups. Judging starts with fat lambs, sheep judged by P. E. Neale, steers by Ralph Meriwether, sale of 46 lambs and four steers to follow.
