Auxiliary wins Freedom award for Alpine High program

The Alpine unit of the American Legion Auxiliary received the George Washington Medal of Freedom at a ceremony marking Washington's birthday. The honor recognizes the unit’s Student Government Program at Alpine High School, coordinated by Mrs. Henry Bailey with local support and financial sponsorship by the American Legion. The award, one of two in community programs, was judged by a panel including state supreme court justices and leaders of national civic groups.

Lil Edwards dies here after long illness in Alpine

Lil Edwards 80 died Tuesday in Brewster Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was widow of Cas Edwards who died Feb. 23, 1961. Born June 15 1889 in Ozona she moved to Alpine in 1907 and operated Edwards Flower Shop. She was active in Baptist Church Eastern Star Pilot Club and served as Pink Lady. Survived by two brothers Frank L. Young Alpine and W W Young Fort Worth. Funeral at 10 a m today in Geeslin Chapel with Rev Jim Johnston. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers listed. honorary pallbearers named.

Two Candidates File For City Council Terms In April Election

Two candidates Merritt Hopson and Homer Hudgins filed for 2 year City Council terms in the April 4 election. Dorothy McBride filed for mayor. No one has filed for the 1 year unexpired term as Alberto Rojo resigned. Deadline to file is March 4. Norman Beard and Mrs McBride expire this year.

LSD case shocks Alpine as Chicago youth treated

A 19 year old from Chicago was hospitalized in Brewster County after LSD use led to violence in a Sanderson motel. He traveled with friends toward California before the arrest and transfer to Brewster Memorial Hospital. Dr. Lockhart warned of permanent brain and reproductive damage from LSD and noted the case underscores risks to curious youths. The youth was jailed and later flown back to Chicago with his mother, while local efforts aimed to deter others from drug experimentation. A wildcat drilling project by Duncan Sartain & Associates was planned in Brewster County, 25 miles southwest of Sanderson.

Alpine Chamber Banquet Set For March 14 At Sul Ross

The Alpine Chamber of Commerce will host its membership banquet at 8 p m on March 14 in the Mountainside Dormitory cafeteria at Sul Ross State University. Tom Thompson will be the guest speaker on education, with Leon Theriot and the Sul Ross Lab Band providing entertainment. Banquet tickets cost 3 and are on sale at multiple local outlets. members should respond by March 7.

Four defendants plead guilty in Pattersons 83rd District Court

In Judge C E Patterson s 83rd District Court four defendants pled guilty in four criminal cases. Trinidad Fuentes Jr of Odessa received eight years for unlawful possession of marijuana after a chase that ended with a crash on North 11th Street. Alonzo B Ramirez drew five years concurrent on jail escape forgery and house burglary charges. Miguel B Ramirez got two years for theft of personal property over fifty dollars. A Sul Ross student admitted marijuana possession with case probated if he returns home to Massachusetts.

Beverly Weyerts filed this week for one of two Alpine School Board seats becoming vacant in April. She is wife of Dr. Paul Weyerts. current president Bob Halpern and secretary Eva Jeanne Mills hold board roles. Filing deadline is March 4.
