A marijuana suspect was captured in the attic of the Otis Coggins residence. The arrest followed a police search prompted by ongoing drug activity in the neighborhood.
A 107 inch telescope at McDonald Observatory resumed operation after a shooter fired seven rounds into the lowered barrel. Jack Hyde was captured and jailed in Jeff Davis County. Sheriff W B Medley and Harlan Smith noted damages were minor. Hyde faced 90 day observation at Big Spring State Hospital.
Mrs Laura Stephens Storey 80 died Wednesday February 11 at her Alpine home. She lived in Alpine 53 years and was a former organist for Hammond Organs in Houston and Holy Rosary Church. Survived by daughter Mrs W J Newell of Alpine, five grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Memorials suggested to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church or Alpine Public Library.
Alpine School trustees opened bids at 4 p.m. Tuesday March 3 in the administration office after final plans were sealed by architects. The project adds 17,735 square feet across 15 classrooms at Central School.
Air conditioning and carpeting will be bid as alternates along with a sprinkler system for area south and east of Central gym. The board retains a 149000 gallon water tank for future use and notes its potential to irrigate Kokernot Park and the golf course. Absentee voting runs March 15 31 for the April 4 trustee election at Central School Cafeteria. candidates must file by March 4.
