Imelda Gallego will be named Alpine High School Queen for 1969-70 at a Saturday night ceremony in the Alpine High Gymnasium starting at 7 30. The coronation court will be introduced and the coronation dance follows with admission 150 for a single and 2 for a couple.
The city vote on April 4 will take place at the newly named Municipal Building, a former bowling alley converted for use by voters. Council member Dorothy McBride seeks the mayoral post as Homer Hudgins retires, with terms for McBride and Norman Beard expiring this year. Filing for City Council closes March 4 at 6 p.m.
Brewster County reports 2,909 residents registered to vote this year. Tax Collector Heil notes possible duplications may trim the count. Last year registrations were 2,489 and in 1968 the total was 2,766 as officials review lists.
City council allows immediate burning of vacant lots without charge through March 15 1970 with one requirement police dispatch notification before fires. A bonus watering program runs Feb 28 to March 28 to reduce rates for watering trees shrubs and grass.
City council vows to seek low cost federal loans or grants for installing bathroom facilities and sewer connections. A list of 143 noncompliant homes was reviewed while mayor notes most homes lack indoor baths. Officials plan to mail letters urging voluntary hookups amid pollution and compliance pressures.
The Alpine Junior High eighth graders captured first place at the Iraan tournament by defeating Rankin 29 to 19. Pio Molinar led with 10 points, with Clinton Smith and Kelly Graham adding eight each. Iraan fell to the Bucks 35 to 20 in the final game as Molinar Graham Smith and Cervantes scored eight and Ramos and Quesada six apiece.
Sul Ross basketball eyes three remaining Lone Star Conference road games starting with No. 1 Stephen F. Austin after a 109 to 92 defeat in Alpine. Larry Jackson scored 44 in the loss but hurt his ankle in the A&I game last Saturday.
Alpine High School will permit girls to wear pants on very cold days on a trial basis. Supt Clarence Winn announced the change after an assembly. Blue jeans remain prohibited and the handbook still bans pants on regular days.
City Council failed to attract bidders for the present City Hall project Tuesday afternoon. Only Casner Motor Co. of Alpine bid on a Chevrolet pickup and a Chevrolet chassis for a Dempster Dumpster unit, both accepted unanimously after discussion of delivery time and conversion costs.
The Alpine Vocational School of Nursing will hold capping exercises on February 6 at 8 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church. The class of 1970 lists 12 students from Alpine Judy Norte Fort Stockton Monahans Presidio Littlefield with the address to be given by Rev. Joe Hermoso.
Brewster County sets May 2 primaries with runoff June 6 and general election November 3. Democrats list many incumbents led by Felix Mc Gaughy for county judge and Lewis B. Gordon first Black candidate for justice of the peace. Republicans name John R. Karr and Howard Hardegree among others. Dr. Coats notes GOP chairmen will meet to set ballot details amid cold weather with 29 and 19 degree readings February 2 and 3.
