Christmas Bird Counts In Big Bend Country Highlight 71-Year Tradition
Chief Park Naturalist notes the National Audubon Society founded counts in 1899 to replace shooting. Six counts are planned in Big Bend, including Rio Grande Village Castelon Chisos Mountains Del Norte and Balmorhea. Counts run dawn to dusk from Dec through Jan 15 to record bird species and numbers.
