Skinner Named Brewster County Sheriff
Jim Skinner of Alpine, former Brewster Sheriff, was appointed by the Commissioners Court to succeed Carl Williams. The 3 to 2 vote followed petitions from residents and the tie broken by Judge Felix McGaughy. Skinner will serve Jan 1, 1970 to Jan 1, 1971 pending next year’s election.

UT Austin Astronomy Department has received a 1000220 NSF grant to fund radio astronomy work near Marfa Texas. Dr James N Douglas notes NSF and NASA support the project as UT scientists monitor on again off again radio noise from Jupiter to learn about the space around the planet.

Hearing Set On S Alpine Rezoning February 17
A zoning hearing is scheduled for 7 30 p m Tuesday February 17 1970 to consider rezoning all land south of the Southern Pacific tracks to R 4 to allow placement of trailers on any lot. The proposal by Mayor Homer Hudgins was approved by Council members Dorothy McBride Tom Conmor and Norman Beard with Paul Vogt abstaining.

Safeguards for School Students under Study
City Council discussed traffic safety measures to protect students at Alpine public schools. Plans include stop and yield signs, speed limit signs, and a possible patrolman for Central School entrances. A no U turn sign and additional signs were approved. further study was ordered.

Mary Zoe Taylor in Serious Car Crash Near Fort Stockton
Mary Zoe Taylor 17 daughter of Mollie Lowther of Alpine and Maria was seriously injured in a single car wreck on U S Highway 67 twenty nine miles south of Fort Stockton. Her Renault overturned and was demolished. She was taken to the Fort Stockton hospital then to Medical Center in Odessa where surgeons treated crushed vertebrae and broken arms. She remained in serious but not critical condition with weeks of radiation planned.

Railroad offers old building for free to tear down
Louis M. Stepanski and Harry L. Stark of El Paso, tax agents for Southern Pacific Co., offered the dilapidated old Soylaid, Inc., building on East Murphy Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets free to anyone who will tear it down. The SP plans to clear weeds and salvage lumber while removing the structure. In other business, the council approved a street light at 10th Street and West Sanderson.

Christmas holidays set for Alpine and Sul Ross students
Alpine public schools will dismiss at 3 p m Friday December 19 ending the second quarter. Students return Monday January 5 1970 for the second semester. Sul Ross State University breaks start December 20 with registration for the second term January 12 1970 and classes resuming January 15.
