City records show Alpine issued 1969 building permits totaling 505 797. Major items included 50 low cost housing units at 613000 and 8 new residences at 99651 plus 5 new commercial buildings at 200300. Previous years varied, with 1968 at 1295882.
Glenn F. Davis 63 longtime Sul Ross State University registrar admissions officer and Fine Arts chairman died Monday afternoon at Brewster Memorial Hospital. Funeral set 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church Alpine with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He taught at McMurry and West Texas University and served in WWII Air Force. survived by his wife Vivian Boston and foster son Ralph Pauley.
Leno Cano faces assault with intent to murder charges after his wife Wedelia Sujan Cano was shot in the facial region at their home around 4 a.m. Friday December 26. He posted a $5 000 bond. Mrs Cano, treated in an El Paso hospital, was reported in good condition. The case was filed in Justice of the Peace Hallie Stillwell's court by Silvestre Rodriguez Lujan.
The 1970 Big Bend Livestock Show will be January 16 and 17 at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair building. 4 H and FFA members will exhibit 43 steers 120 fat lambs 30 breeding sheep and 10 horses. Officers include Odie Grubb president Joe Lane vice president George Mills treasurer and Richard Bain secretary. Superintendents are Jim Phillips Tyrone Kelly Jack Shely Stephen Lee Stumberg III Kent Powell Billy Weston Janet Johnson and more. Judges include Dr. Jack Rattle Calvin Holcomb Johnny Fitzgerald and Dr. Everett Turner. Also noted are student visits from Baylor Perryton and Ft Hood households.
The Internal Revenue Service said employers will receive new rates and tables for Wage withholding starting January 1 1970. R L Phinney noted computer runs were made pending Congress and the President approving the Tax Reform Act of 1969 provisions. A revised Circular E will be mailed before July 1 with post July 1 rates.
