Chief Park Naturalist notes pronghorns once numbered in the tens of millions and could run at speeds up to 40 mph. By 1910 bands dwindled due to hunting and curiosity, leading to emergency protections. In Big Bend National Park, 136 head were reintroduced in 1947 and 1948 to restore populations.
In Brewster County during July 1969 a total of 34 motor vehicles were registered. Names include Ruben Mendoza from Van Horn with a Chevrolet sport coupe and Pedro B. Belloc from Presidio with a Chevrolet pickup among others stationed at Alpine and Marathon.
Though many drifted Perth, a few remained on the flats west of Surra Mesa and on Tomillo Flat. Today the prong horn population seems to be on a slight increase.
Sul Ross State University announces a new instructor joining the English department this fall. Peter Wild, prizewinning author and poet, will serve as assistant professor after earning Writer's Digest first prize in 1964 and poetry prizes at the University of Arizona in 1966 and 1967. His wife Sylvia Ortiz Servantes is a high school teacher.
