The Alpine event opened with a town parade led by Dr. Bryan Wildenthal and Mayor Hugh White featuring Sul Ross College, a pep squad and visiting rodeo queens. Sul Ross swept events including bull riding barrel race and saddle bronc, while Mildred Cotten of Andrews was named all around cowgirl and Sonny Sikes of Sam Houston State won the saddle title.

District VI Teachers Meet at Sul Ross College
The District VI Texas Classroom Teachers Association workshop met in Alpine at Sul Ross College on April 10. Mrs. Dorothy Habberstad chaired the event with local chairwoman Mrs. Berta Clark Lassiter and Dr. G. P. Smith coordinating. Highlights include Alpine and El Paso affiliates earning state service pins, new officers for Alpine for 1954 56, and a panel discussion on improving Texas schools for the century.

Alpine defeats Fort Stockton 24 18 in Fort Stockton gym to claim the District 7A volleyball championship before about 500 fans. Elisa Hernandez served seven straight points to spark Alpine’s early lead, with Nora Payne earning all tournament honors alongside Hernandez.

John A. Dumas Rites Held Sunday
John Allison Dumas 71 died Saturday in Fort Davis at his son Jack Dumas home where he had lived months. Born December 23 1882 in Tyler Texas he moved to Fort Davis in 1921 and became a contractor and cabinet maker who built a large Fort Davis building with stores below living quarters and shop above. Funeral was Sunday at Hillcrest cemetery Fort Davis with ministers from local churches officiating. He is survived by son Jack and one grandson Jerry Dumas. Pallbearers listed from Fort Davis San Angelo and Alpine.

Alpine High's Fidel Cano pitched seven innings for the Bucks in a 12-8 win over Valentine High. Cano fanned eight, allowed 11 hits and seven walks as Alpine claimed both B games this week. Cano homered, Terry Beckett doubled and singled, with doubles by Burgess and Fierro.

Alpine Native Serves On Catamount In Iwo Jima Exercise
James D. Bow of Alpine served aboard the USS Catamount during Operation Flag Hoist on Iwo Jima. The amphibious drill involved Navy and Marine personnel to refine landing tactics under combat conditions. Bow, son of Mr and Mrs R A Bow, expects Navy discharge in June as his family resides in San Diego California.

Funeral Services for William M. Smith Held in Alpine
Funeral services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church for 73 year old William Marion Smith who died Monday at Springdale Memorial Hospital. Born in Brady, he lived in Alpine, worked in Huntsville before retiring to a stock farm in Huntsville Ark. Survivors include wife Mary Louise, two sons Charles T. Smith and William M. Smith, two daughters and many relatives.

Rain Returns Bring Moisture to Big Bend Range
Cloudy skies over the Big Bend and Davis mountains have dropped rain for the first time in four years, with Alpine noting only 0.79 inch. Marathon, Fort Davis, and the area saw showers up to an inch, while Presidio county reported damage from a flash flood. Two tornadoes near Marfa caused minor damage. The rain aids ground moisture but several months of follow up rain are needed to restore the range.
