Alpine schools dominated the Interscholastic League district meet at Alpine High, winning multiple events across grade and high school divisions. Central and Centennial teams posted top finishes in Number Sense, spelling, readwrite, memory, and declamation as Alpine claimed a large points lead over Marfa Crane and Fort Stockton.

Mrs. M. Graef 92 Dies After Long Illness
Mrs. Mary Graef age 92 died last Thursday at her daughter’s home in San Angelo after an extended illness. She was born near San Marcos Texas March 30 1862 and lived in Clarendon Horsehead crossing and Alpine before moving to San Angelo then back to Alpine. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the First Methodist church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survivors include three daughters and four sons with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services set for Edgar Martin in Alpine
Edgar Martin 51 died suddenly last Saturday in Amarillo while on a business trip. Born August 7, 1902 in Batesville he lived in Alpine most of his life working in highway and construction. Survivors include Estelle his widow, son Edgar Jr. in Norfolk VA, a brother Hampton of Carlsbad NM, two sisters and his mother in Carlsbad NM.

A coffee in the Home Economics parlor is also planned.

Alpine Independent School District re elected trustees J C Coleman and Edwin Fowlkes in a high turnout of 708 votes. Coleman led with 535, Fowlkes 529, Nell Yates 226, plus 11 write ins headed by B B Bounds. Both trustees will serve three year terms. Other races included Mara thon where Jack Todd and Clarence Haynes won seats. Fort Davis re elected Otis Grubb and F M Kahn without opposition.

Photo Lamp Shade From Alpine Man Gains Popularity
Alpine photographer W. D. Smithers began making photo color lamp shades for sale seventeen years ago. He estimates over 136,800 pictures have been used, mostly local scenes, with shades shipped across the United States and abroad. He notes patent attempts failed. one patent voided in Arizona for lack of invention, and he has helped about a dozen people start producing the shades.

Former Alpine resident Mrs A M Sampley died last Sunday in a Dallas hospital after several weeks illness. Funeral services were held in Denton Monday with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park there. Dr Samp ley, now vice president of North Texas State College at Denton, was a former Sul Ross College faculty member and the couple were well known here.

Judging Contest Set For Saturday At Sul Ross College
About 250 Southwest Texas Future Farmers of America members will enter livestock, grass, and wool judging contests sponsored by Sul Ross College. Teams from Whiteface Abilene Brownwood Cotulla and the El Paso valley will compete. Participants will stay in Lawrence hall and attend the intercollegiate rodeo events tonight and tomorrow.

Motor vehicle licenses issued in the county through March 31 totaled 1 944, 74 fewer than 1953. Of the 1954 total 1 294 were passenger cars, 312 were commercial, 203 farm and 54 were trailers.

Three Alpine Youths Injured in Jeep Roll Over
Three boys riding in a Jeep on the road south from U S 67 90 near the S P underpass were injured when the vehicle overturned last Saturday. Dock Skinner 14 suffered a skull fracture and scalp wound and was released after improving. Bob Stovell 12 sustained a back injury and was taken to El Paso for further tests after a cast was applied. Arnold Sawyer 13 had only minor injuries.

A 4 p.m. parade will open the Intercollegiate rodeo at Jackson Field with 200 riders from 20 colleges.
