A heated session between Alliance business leaders and county commissioners cooled after hours of explanations. They discussed a Hemingford route and the Lincoln Highway project, with petitions and state board delays, ending in renewed cooperation and a pledge to pursue cooperative road work without wasting state funds.
L. V. Nichols of J. V. Nichols Co. urged Omaha businessmen to stay cheerful and take pride in their work. He warned against pessimism over unpaid bills and tight lending, noting autos and prices may fall but stressed continued optimism will reveal strong overall business.
Five of the ten day filers for nominating petitions have filed acceptances by February 12. The men are D. C. Bradbury A. V. Gavin Fred Hayes F. W. Harris and G. W. Nation. Acceptances due by February 22 or names will be dropped from the ballot. F. J. Coyle Jr of Hemingford was in Alliance Wednesday.
The second weekly luncheon of business and club women was held at the chamber of commerce. Secretary Orge Carey outlined forming a ladies auxiliary to hold luncheons and aid club work, including a salesmanship school tied to night courses for clerks and women.
Judge Tash in juvenile court Thursday ordered Marie Davis age fifteen Irene nine and Leroy five committed to the state home for dependent and neglected children. Mrs Morris the mother now Mrs William Morris testified her husband deserted her in Antioch and she works as a night dishwasher at the Harvey cafe, unable to care for the children who have been running the streets.
Postcard style letters show Hawaii students in Ebele and Eleele sharing news with Alliance and Scottsbluff pupils. Japanese writers describe floods, rain, crops, lighthouses, and island scenes while requesting news about U.S. cities and life.
Box Butte county commissioners report receipt of a Hay Springs petition urging a federal highway from Hay Springs extending south and west to link with the federal highway sixteen miles north of Alliance. Signed by 225 residents and adjacent landowners the plan would serve travel east and south of Hay Springs and connect two east west routes. The county board favors the proposal and will arrange a connecting road to the county line.
The Herald forces a pause in the serial Taxi and delays Taal to next Tuesday because a late rush of ads prevented increasing pages. Readers must wait for the next installment.
Miss Alta Young held the second of her weekly plane recitals at her home Thursday evening. Those on the program were Misses Katharine Harris, Esther Nason, Mildred Ryckman, Gertrude Carpenter, Dorothy Armour, Katharine Hargarten and Donald Newberg, Oliver Overman and Chas. O'Bannon.
The Herald previews candidates with qualifications and voter guidance. Bradbury, a veteran of railroad service turned businessman, is praised for energy and a blemish-free record, popular with progressives and supported by his Alliance ties and contracts with Newberry building and Imperial theater. He has lived in Alliance twenty years and has no prior office record.
George W Nation, a long time Box Butte resident, filed his petition as a first candidate. He previously ran a sheep ranch on Snake Creek then pursued horticulture and developed several inventions on paper. Nation is not active in politics but has supported key public questions.
Bill O Keefe, a Box Butte county native, joined about seventy five ex soldiers in a meeting that drafted him. He accepted the race when no exit remained and cites deep ties to the city’s needs and growth observed over years.
George E. Davis, a Burlington machinist and Alliance resident for twenty years, owns a home, is a large stockholder and director at Alliance Building & Loan, and emerges as a steady citizen stepping into his first political candidacy.
Si Thompson, long an Alliance booster, has championed roads, schools and public improvements since his arrival in town. He briefly left for Holdrege but returned, continuing to push Alliance as a good place to live and do business.
Mr Hacker now on the council commands a strong following due to labor union affiliations. He is secretary of the affiliated shop crafts and their spokesman on many issues. He avoids the label statesman, but is a hard worker who often accomplishes his goals.
In the push to replace the city manager plan as candidates thin, firemen seek suitable material and nominate Fred Hayes. He is a capable, conscientious ally of the First State bank and local groups, with prior experience. Hayes came to Alliance from Broken Bow where he served as the sole Democrat on an eight member board, suggesting a distinctive political record.
A. 8. Mote is identified as a contractor and builder regarded as honest, though the text ends abruptly with an incomplete thought.
Harry Coursey, long-time Alliance resident and former councilman, supports the city manager plan after urging from friends. His recent candidacy may be affected by his active backing of other candidates, though he remains untroubled.
Mr Snyder is drafted to ensure enough candidates to draw voters to the polls. He is a local business figure with independent, honest, substantial credentials and prior council experience, expected to attract considerable support.
Monte, raised in Hay Springs, has five years as a course clerk and prior work with railroaders. He is described as a ranch hand and plutocratic real estate dealer who served as secretary of the building and loan association over about twenty years in Box Butte county. He is said to possess valuable city knowledge and high energy.
Secretary George M. Carey of the Alliance chamber of commerce left Thursday for Washington D C to present data to the interstate commerce commission showing Alliance faces discriminatory freight and express rates. A. T. Lunn assisted in compiling figures and updating them after a state rate increase order.
Pete Wolf, a local social figure, is back in the city jail serving the remainder of a sentence after parole. Police say he had two girls, one 17, with him in a friend's room. liquor or drugs may have been involved. The father of one girl does not want a prosecution due to publicity, but county authorities may pursue charges.
Two patriotic speeches were given at Central school during Patriot Week. Judge Tash urged seventh and eighth graders to embrace citizenship and patriotism, while Mrs. S. W. Thompson spoke to sixth graders on what it means to be American and the country’s past wars. Mrs Celia Rodgers returned to take charge of Harper’s millinery department after the fall season.
Forecast for Nebraska shows fair conditions in the north with colder air spreading south tonight and Saturday. The system brings much colder temperatures and snow is likely in the northern regions.
