Competing Pope John Paul II biopics air head to head
ABC and CBS rush two hour films on Pope John Paul II after his death. ABC film shoots in Lithuania and Rome with Thomas Kretschmann and Jon Voight, while CBS casts Cary Elwes and features a slower pace with distinct storytelling. CBS sought Benedict XVI's blessing. ABC says it proceeded without Vatican aid. Controversial scenes spark debate over depictions of Poland under Communism and private meetings with Reagan.
