Scientists Listen For Evidence Of Other Life In Universe
Harvard researchers unveil BETA a 4 foot radio telescope with a billion channels to seek intelligent life. About 250 scientists from Harvard and beyond observe the upgraded system on the hilltop west of Boston. The device uses dual beams and an earthward antenna to suppress terrestrial signals while a room sized computer parses frequencies for pure tones. Funded by the Planetary Society and others, BETA operates at about 40 thousand dollars yearly and takes six months to scan the entire sky.
