Aiken Eyes Operation of Landfill as Cost Save Plan
Aiken County Administrator Bill Shepherd proposed that the public works department operate a proposed nine county regional landfill at the Savannah River Site. The Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority may review the plan at a November 8 meeting. Shepherd argues county staff and equipment can cut startup costs and maintain jobs while handling waste at about current per ton costs, with future savings possible. The 700 acre site would handle up to 200000 tons of garbage, down the line as recycling grows and waste declines. The Three Rivers counties include Aiken Allendale Bamberg Barnwell Calhoun Orangeburg Edgefield Saluda and McCormick.
