Aiken County budget fails to gain first reading

Aiken County Council failed to approve the 1985 86 budget ordinance in a 4 3 vote. The measure would have raised eight mills for county operations and debt service. The council asked for a list of cuts and personnel reductions.

State Hospital faces 37 percent inappropriate admissions

Columbia AP report notes about 37 percent of admissions to the State Hospital during a two month span were inappropriate and could have been treated in home counties. Most were alcohol or drug abusers or had personality or family problems. Involuntary referrals comprise about 85 percent.
