Tornado Hits Barnwell County Slamming Mobile Homes
A quick road tornado touched down near the Aiken Barnwell County line yesterday afternoon, toppling a radio tower, destroying three mobile homes, and damaging several more. No injuries were reported as a severe storm system moved through the area, with losses pegged at about 50000. The WBAW AM tower went off air and a severe thunderstorm watch was later canceled.

A 50 acre south side shopping center with 15 acres in phase one and a 92 unit Keeneland condominium complex will be built near the fork of Silver Bluff and Pine Log Roads. Bolton & Co. plans the center with construction starting after approvals and completion of specs by year’s start. Belk has not decided on locating in the center.

Area Peach Prices To Rise As Freeze Takes Its Effect
Peach prices are expected to rise as the freeze impacts the crop. About half of the normal peach yield will come from the Ridge area in South Carolina, with the upstate lacking peaches. Georgia reports only half a crop. Clemson Extension agent Allen Bayles notes the Ridge area dominates this year's production.

Gas prices inch up for Memorial Day travel in South Carolina
Gasoline costs rise ahead of vacation season with a 6 cent per gallon jump since Easter. South Carolina averages 1.255 per gallon, slightly above the national 1.252, while Aiken County self service stations show regular at 1.065 and unleaded at 1.164. North Augusta areas offer lower prices, with some stations as low as 1.03 for regular and 1.13 for unleaded, though full service runs higher. Ralph Peters of the AAA Motor Club notes prices aren’t much higher than last Memorial Day and tourist demand remains robust.
