Letters to the Editor on Area 4 school funding and test scores
A reader argues that Area 4 schools are underfunded, leading to low test scores. They recount personal experience at Busbee Elementary, A. L. Corbett Middle, and Wagener-Salley High and urge upgrades to equipment and outside programs to boost computer and science skills. Recall vote could topple California Assembly speaker
In the 60th district east of Los Angeles voters face a May 16 recall of state Rep. Paul Horcher who after re election as a Republican declared himself independent and voted to keep Willie Brown as speaker. A Republican majority in the Assembly hinges on the recall outcome with six other candidates also on the ballot. Horcher defends his actions as blocking a hard line GOP agenda while Democrats and labor back him to preserve Democratic control. The drive costs taxpayers about a million dollars and Horcher argues it diverts funds from education. Brown faces term limits ending in 1996 and may seek San Francisco mayor if he loses the speakership.
