Wise death penalty case pauses civil suit in Aiken

Solicitor Barbara Morgan reports Arthur Hastings Wise has been returned to a state mental health facility for more evaluation ahead of his death penalty trial for killing four people. The Wise case has delayed Stanley Vance's civil suit against Phelon Inc. Vance, a former security guard at the Aiken plant, alleged Phelon officials ignored risks after Wise's dismissal and that safety measures were inadequate. Dr. Madison pleaded guilty to slashing a child’s throat in 1998 and attempted suicide. The judge, influenced by a letter from Dr. Madison's ex husband Dr. Joseph E Wilson, imposed a maximum sentence with substantial suspension for community service, while the child urged leniency for his mother.
