Aiken County eyes privatizing civil service papers

County Administrator William Shepherd reports Aiken County is studying private contracting to serve civil papers including jury summons and subpoenas. If adopted, the plan could save about 40,000 to 50,000 dollars annually and free six to eight deputies for other duties. A private firm would hire local staff to perform the work part time.

Madison sentence revised for child attack crime

Dr Shirley Ann Madison was sentenced to a 90 day work release program for attempting to take the life of her child. Judge Frank Eppes modified the sentence after a state prison official said the crime was too severe for work release. Madison will report to the county jail for 45 weeks.
