Minor Georgia quake rattles near Athens Washington area

A 4.5 magnitude quake was recorded early Tuesday by USGS and SRS seismologists. It centered around Road 470 between Athens and Washington, Georgia at 1:04 a.m. with coordinates 33.69N 82.89W. Seismologist Don Stevenson noted unusual activity for the region, saying activity is rare and usually centered around Clark's Hill. The SRS and regional stations logged the event, with the last similar quake felt in 1993 near Couchton and smaller shocks reported in Williston and New Ellenton in 2001.
