In Baghdad dawn air strikes followed Bush's 8 p.m. EST ultimatum. Tomahawk missiles and precision bombs hit targets aimed at Saddam Hussein and Iraqi leadership. Bush declared decisive force to disarm Iraq and free its people after a war council meeting with Rumsfeld and Myers. See STRIKE, page 4A
Frontline US forces used cruise missiles and precision bombs on a site near Baghdad thought to house Iraqi leaders. President Bush called it the opening salvo in a campaign to disarm Iraq and defend the world. About 300000 troops were in striking range, supported by over 1000 warplanes. Before the 8 pm EST deadline Saddam resigned was due. Iraqi parliament reaffirmed support for him as the White House notified Congress of war justification.
