End of Canada trade pact clouds state forestry outlook
In Hemingway the state’s 7.5 billion logging and lumber sector fears higher timber prices as the five year old US Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement expires March 31. Lawsuits on antidumping and subsidies will be filed April 2 with the Commerce Department and Trade Commission, per attorney John Ragosta. He notes Canada owns 95 percent of its timberland and allocates it to manufacturers at 25 to 50 percent of open market value.
