Larry Gene Bell testified he drove his mother to a Columbia foot doctor for a 2 p.m. appointment and stopped at locations including a Columbia hamburger shop and the Lexington Post Office before returning home. He claimed an alibi and described visions about Shari Smith, while prosecutors say he was the caller who taunted the family. The 17 year old vanished May 31 and was found five days later in Saluda County. authorities cited dehydration or strangulation as causes.
