Tehran reports a domestic Iran Air flight from Tehran to Ahvaz was attacked by an Iraqi fighter and blown up near noon local time. No details on the crash site or passenger count were released. Ahvaz lies southwest of Tehran near the Iraqi border amid a long standing border conflict.
Soviet news agency Tass reports the Mir space station begins flight as the first base module for a permanently manned orbital complex. It features six ports for visiting crafts and advanced flight control equipment. Cosmonauts will join after initial, pilotless testing in low earth orbit.

Former astronaut Richard Truly is poised to head the space shuttle program as NASA undergoes changes amid the Challenger investigation. The appointment, to be announced by acting administrator William Graham, follows calls for full disclosure of documents and concerns about flight safety decisions before the Challenger launch. Truly, who flew on the 1981 and 1983 shuttle missions, would replace Jesse Moore as shuttle director.
The Commerce Department cut the October-December 1985 GDP growth to 1.2 percent, citing a widening trade deficit that battered U.S. industry. Yearly growth remains 2.3 percent, the weakest since 1982. Analysts foresee possible 4 percent growth if oil prices stay low and inflation eases.
The 1986 Education Department chart ranks all states and D C on dropout rates and test scores. It shows 70.9 percent of public students graduated in 1984, with Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota posting top rates and Washington D C and several southern states at the bottom.
